Question:
acer tm 8104wlmi v IBM lenovo z60m v HP nc8230
Ladies and Gents,
I am currently a university student looking for a decent laptop to last me about 5-6 years mostly for work and the occasional game or two. Now, having done a bit of research and looking around, ive cut my range down to these three products:
1) Acer TravelMate 8104WLMi - LX.T7206.067: (approx £1170)
-Pentium M 760, 2ghz
-1024mb DDR2 SDRAM (max 2gb)
- DVD RW dual layer multi drive
- ati radeon x700 128mb pci-e
-100gb HDD
-bluetooth/wireless/5-in-1 card reader
2) IBM Lenovo thinkpad z60m UH3FKUK (approx. £1200 inc vat)
-Pentium M 760, 2ghz
-1024mb DDR2 SDRAM (max 2gb)
- DVD writer
- ati radeon x600 128mb pci-e
-100gb HDD
-bluetooth/wireless/5-in-1 card reader/fingerprint reader
3) HP compaq nc8230 (approx £1110 inc vat)
-Pentium M 750, 1.86ghz
-512mb ram (max 2gb)
- DVD/CD rw
- ati radeon x600 64mb pci-e
-60gb HDD
- 3 YEAR WARRANTY
Now, as you can see, in term for specs and money, acer leads the race. However, it has to be said that 1) Ive heard various negative comments about Acer's Support infrastructure and it being v poor. 2) Acer's build quality is debatable.
IBM Lenovo is a superbly built laptop (as the price would dictate) but its a shame that I am not able to write CDs as its only a DVD writer.
HP, finally, has come up with another machine which is well built (magneisum chassis etc.), but the price is v., steep and im not exactly sure why.
So, I ask you for your thoughts/opinions/advice regarding which one of the three laptops would you think is suitable and why, bearing in mind that I am a student on a tight leash!!
Thanks v much
Jit

A DVD burner can also burn CD's. ;)
The HP does have a 3-year warranty, perhaps explaining why it is expensive for what you're getting. Try subtracting that and see what the price is then.
If you want to play some of the latest games, the I would go for the Acer - the X700 128MB is about 1.5-2x faster than the X600. However, the ThinkPad offers considerably better build quality than the Acer.
What type of games do you want to play?

thanks v much. chaz
umm...well i want to play the new rainbow six lockdown game as i am a Rainbox six player since day one..a bit of CSS, other shoot em ups. nothing too flashy i hope :S
but i do also want build quality as this laptop does need to last me quite a long time (6yrs)..
How are toshiba laptops in terms of build quality and service?
Thanks
Jit

Toshiba's are poorly built, and terrible hard drives. I wouldn't touch one with a stick. Also, their support is on its way down.
I played Rainbow Six on my GeForce 4MX at high settings, which is nearly 5 years old, so any newer card will demolish that game. CS:S is not very demanding at all, and will run quite smoothly on an X600.
If you want your notebook to last, I would go for the Thinkpad. The HP would be my second choice. I like the ThinkPad a bit better because of the superior keyboard.

If you can live with a dim WXGA screen of NC8230, I would suggest NC8230. Or you may choose a better WSXGA. I am not quite sure about acer's quility, and the IBM is pretty big and heavy to me.
I have my NC8230 for a month now. I am happy about its build quility and performance. I play games on this laptop too. X600 64mb can handle Battlefield2 medium setting @1024x 756. Handle Halflife2: source and CS:S at high setting. (1.73ghz, 1.5gb ram)

You may also wanna consider batterylife and Weight and Dimensions.
I am also a school student, i am looking for something to be powerfull for gaming, and thin and light and good batterylife, with an awsome screen, at quiet, i don't mind too much heat either.
the best i have found is the ASUS Z70va and the Samsung X50 XVM 2130.
Those 2 are thin and light and pack alot of power :D, but the ASUS is cheap compared to the SAmsung.
You should check out the ASUS Z70va it is customizable and you may be able to get it for about 1k UK:
Well In Theory i can get an ASUS Z70va with:
1.8ghz
1g ram
60gb Hd @5400
Super Multi Burner Drive
For about 2k Canadian.
And rite now the conversion rate from UK to Canada is half.
Meaning you divide 2k and this thing will cost u 1k UK and that's including 15% canadian tax, and you guys have VAT which around 15% too.
BUT!!! the market ain't so nice to the UK.
If you buy a Mc Donald meal it would cost like 5 cdn dollars, it would cost about 4 pounds in the UK. Meaning this conversion does not apply to much.
and for computers stuff this conversion does not apply much,, the difference a mere 20$ or so. =\
Good luck but check out the ASUS Z70va :D
Thanks,
