Question:
Averatecs any good?
When I was looking for notebooks, I kept o running into Averatec. All I know is that they are not that expensive. Does anyone know if they are worth having and the positives and negatives?

I currently have one of the older model Averatecs. I am not too good at reviews but Ill do my best.
I got it a little over a year ago for school purposes, I did extensive research before opting to get it, the company at first glance seemed fairly new but I then learned that they changed their name about 4 years back I think it was now.
The model I opted for was an AMD 2.5 gig processor with 512MB Ram and a 40 gig hard drive. It is the 12in model(perfect for me at the time due to the need for portability. It has an integrated video card(I honestly have not looked at the new ones and am not versed in the newest specs, but at the time this was one of the cheapest laptops in its power/performance range that I could find.
I bought it from Sam's club for $950.
To date the laptop is still running surprisingly strong. The casing is fairly cheap plastic, and I have scratched it up several times, but no real damage.
The screen, while not a high quality screen is fairly decent but I do have a small line in the top center of the screen(more due to my lack of care wih handling than anything else)
As far as what it could run(kinda obsolete now, but oh well) I could play GTA3, Black and White, Warcraft 3, and midtown madness on it. I didnt try much else. original half-life worked... but not too well.
I honestly have either had just really good luck or they are decently built, because I have had only a few minor issues with it.
1) wifi connectivity - I seem to drop connection A LOT! and totally randomly, sometimes I can be on 20 minutes, other times 12 hours. when it drops, I can no longer even see any networks. logging out of the user account then back in allows me to reconnect.
2) keyboard problems - this has happened MAYBE 5 times in the past year, its been on but the screen is closed, I will open it, and attempt to login and the keyboard does not respond. closing the screen then reopening always fixes it. I still dont know what causes it.

overall I would give the laptop an 8 out of ten. its worked great and shows no signs of stopping.

You should go to www.averatecforums.com and ask all the users there. I'd say they are a hit or miss company, some love their Averatecs and some loathe them.

im kinda impartial, the one I got didnt give me many options aside from web and word processing, but it wasnt a bad machine IMHO.

My Averatec was pretty good, in fact I would say it can't be better considering the price. About the Wifi though, yes it would seem it isn't as good as Intel Pro/Wireless, while mine did not have a constant disconnecting problem unless it was out of range or borderline range, however, it seems to me that the range is less than that of Intel Pro/Wireless (I know this cause I have a Fujitsu S6231 now). The keyboard is a bit on the flimsy side but I never had an issue with it

I would stay away from Avertech. I have heard very bad things about there service. There notebooks are of a great price, and look nice... but I don't think they will last.

I think most Averatec's use Ralink cards instead of Intel ones.

You could always ask around the the Avertec Forum here on computer-notebook. But I also recommend you fill out the 'What should I buy? FAQ' stickied at the top of the forum. That way we can provide additional informed choices against the Avertec model you are looking at. =)
