Question:
Developer need advice on new notebook
Here is the situation:
I am a proud owner of Asus S5N ultra light notebook.
I have been using this device for more than 1 years. The reason why i bought this device is obvious, a light notebook which will travel with me wherever i go, for some web surfing, document editing and some light applications.
I changed my job and now i am woking at home most of the time. I have a powerfull desktop system but i have work on my notebook because i have to carry my projects around.
And the scenario:
I dont think it is a good idea to use my current device as primary work machine. I dont care about the clock speed(although the system has 1.6 dothan) but the reasons are:
-the system can only be upgraded to 768 megs of ram max.
-the HDD is 4500 RPM, reducing the overall sytem performance
-and the most important thing is, since the machine is designed to be portable, i dont think that it is a good idea to use this device 7/24
My questions are:
-Anyone out there using an ultralight notebook, especially S5N heavly, is it possible to face hardware failures or stability issues on heavy usage?
-Since a developer needs as much as screen space possible, it would be a good idea to use secondry monitor, but this choice is dependent on the answers to previous question
-If i choose to buy another system what would you recommend on these criterias:
Stability and portability is first priority but screen resolution must be higher than XGA. In this case a 14" with SXGA would be ideal
I dont care about the multimedia features(DVD writer, dedicated display memory etc.) and the performance is not an issue because i bealive that any system will serve for my needs
I am a little bit low on budget, i mean it would be great to buy a top level thinkpad, but i dont think i can affort a system with a price tag of 1500$+
So what are your recommendations
