Advice on buying a new notebook please!

Question:
Advice on buying a new notebook please!
1) What is your budget? No more than 1700
2) What size notebook would you prefer?Thin and light or maybe a 15"
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook? Basic home computing, doing work from home, I am a accountant. I also do accounting for a small business my friend owns. MP3 for my ipod and pictures of my daughter, videos of my daughter. I am also starting Grad school in the fall and will be getting my masters in marketing and communication so I would be using it for school for the entire 17 month program. Of course internet.
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk? I would be carrying it to school and to my friends place of business and possibly my "real job".
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games? no games
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like? No real preference just something that doesn't feel like a cheap piece of plastic like most of the laptops and circuit city and best buy. I couldn't believe how cheap some of these $2000 systems seemed.
7) How many hours of battery life do you need? Not really sure. I guess it is not that important cause I should always be close to a outlet
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person? I don't mine.
9) What country are you buying this in? USA
Screen Specifics
10) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer? I am not really sure how to answer this question. I don't really want the smallest text but I don't want the largest either. I will be watching DVD and stuff. Maybe something middle ground?
11) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen? Not really sure on this one either. The glossy ones look cool for viewing movies but they had alot of glare at the dell store but it was really sunny in there.
Build Quality and Design
12) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you? of course but build quality if more important
13) How long do you want this laptop to last? Three years or at least till I finish my masters and get a good job so I can buy another one ;)
Notebook Components
14) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB? Well I guess around 80-100 since I will be storing alot of mp3's, pictures, movies and other ****.
15) Do you need a DVD, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-R drive? I need to be able to copy my daughters movies onto DVD so I can mail them to her grandma.
Thank you very much for your help.
James

Oh yea, one more question. I have research and tried to figure out the difference between XP pro and XP media center. I like the media center functions and stuff but I am worried that I won't be able to connect to my new colleges network. Is this a problem with media center? Usually xp pro is like $150 more and I am squeezing my budget as it is.
Thanks,
James

You might want to look at the Dell E1505 since gaming isn't a major priority - it has decent build and coupled with a Dell coupon, you'll get exceptional value. You also might want to check out the Sony FE series - better build quality than the Dell, but at a higher cost. In addition, you also might want to look at Sony's FJ-series if you want a decent 14" notebook.

If you're an accountant, then stick to the safeside of XP Pro
Check out this Chembook 3051-V ....at.... http://discountlaptops.com/index.php...&model_id=1261
It has a fast processor and has ram capacity for easily doing Audits.
It also has an option for a fast hard drive (7200rpm)
And it has dvd/cd - rw for your recording needs.
It has a nice build but it doesn't look spectacular or anything special.

XPPro isn't really necessary, but it might be worthwhile to get if you are networked.
It looks like a business-class notebook would be best for you. They are more 'professional' than normal consumer notebooks, and also have better build quality and support.
The ThinkPad T60 is what I recommend. It's got an awesome keyboard, screen, and will last you a long time. Backed by great support:

For less money, the HP 6300 series is great - see it on HP's Small Business website:

Comes standard with a 3-year warranty, and build quality is excellent.

What do you guys think about the z60t? I like it for it's widescreen. Although I really like the business notebooks because of their business look and sturdy construction, I like the options of the media notebooks for personal use. Being a newbie and all, I think the z series kinda incorporates some of both.
Their website is way expensive. Any place to get them cheaper?

The z60t looks, well nothing spectacular, but it will definately be adequate to your needs.
I have seen it advertised in pcworld.com and the picture shows it to be a very professional laptop.
