Maybe he wants to have a Thinkpad due to the various qualities of the Thinkpad and also wants to use it for games.
To answer the question - the FireGL V5200 is the workstation version of the Radeon X1600. On default drivers it may perform a bit less than optimal, and may have compatilbility problems with OpenGL games.
By using Catalyst drivers it should function just like a Radeon.
By using the tweaked Omega drivers, it should function like an optimized Radeon. The latest versions of the drivers claims to add specific FireGL-tweaks to solve compatibility issues and improve performance.

Re: IBM T60p?
I doubt the ATI catalyst drivers that ATI directly provides in its website will work?? It doesn't work for my T43.. It does not allow me to download it as ATI asks me to contact my computer manufacturer as the software has been custamized by the computer manufacturer... which I have no doubt in case of IBM and hope that Lenovo has too done the same for the T60s.
ATI lists the other computer manufacturers that just uses the ATI cards and uses ATI provided drivers.. for those computers, you can use the drivers provided by ATI... Try going to ATI website and try downloading the drivers... it will ask you to select your system or show you a warning... that way you can figure out if T60 also has the ATI drivers customized by Lenovo.
