Question:
Centrino Core-Duo running XP Home?
I've read that WinXP Home doesn't support more than one processor, so why would a dual-core notebook come with XP Home? They are two seperate processors, aren't they? Wouldn't that be short-changing the notebook owner?
Reason why I'm asking is that I've ordered the Acer 5672 which is a dual-core notebook, but only comes with Windows XP Home. Will I have to install Pro to use the 2 cores?

No, Win XP Homes does support dual core processors which is basically 2 cores on a single die. Dual processors are on the other hand 2 physically different processors on 2 seprate sockets which is only supported by Win XP Pro.

You are probably getting confused with Hyperthreading which some P4s support. It allows the limited running of simultaneous threads on one CPU. XP Home can't do it, but Pro can.

And just to assuage any fears you might have, I am currently running a Core Duo on XP home and it works fine.

O.K., now you guys confused me.
Windows XP Home works fine with core-duo..that's great. It should RUN, but does it take advantage of both cores?
Good point in that someone might be confused between Hyperthreading and dual-cores...they are different. XP Home will support hyperthreading, but not multiprocessors, which is what (I believe) the Centrino Core-Duo is.
So, the question remains, will XP Home work with the Centrino Duo in a dual-processor mode?
Thanks for helping everybody.

Yes, it can make use of the dual core processor. It is for the programs that have to be capable of using a dual core processor. The OS ability in there is a bit limited. There are a few programs out there which can make full use of the 2 cores. Many games have patches which will allow the use of 2 cores. If you get these patches and if the manufacturer of the program you are going to use releases or has these patches than the program will be able to use both the cores. Its the same whther you get XP Pro or Home.
The Core Duo is a dual core processor not dual processor or multiprocessor as you put it.

Read my first post above...
Basically the Core Duo is not 2 separate physical processors(multiprocessor), but has 2 processing cores on a single die. Win XP Home wont be able to see the second processor in a multiprocessor system, but is capable of using the second core in a dual core system.(which includes the Core Duo, Pentium D, Athlon64 X2 and the upcoming Turion64 X2).
The Core Duo is a single socket system whereas a multiprocessor system uses 2 or more sockets to connect to the motherboard.

You should be fine with Home. But if you have already ordered it then just keep it. The extra features of Pro might come in handy sometimes.
