Is it possible to build a notebook on your own? I have built a few desktops for myself and for my friends, but have never dwelved into notepads yet.

Yes, but only limited to a few things.
CPU, HD, RAM, Wireless and depending on some models, the optical drive.
ASUS and MSI are some good barebone choices.

I am considering doing this for my next laptop as you can generally save a few bucks (actually a few hundred) and choose the exact brands and products you want.

On my Uniwill 259EA1 barebone (signature) the following things can be changed:
When you choose barebone:
Screen (1280x800 or 1680x1050)
Keyboard (Different layouts)
The rest:
CPU
RAM
HD
Bluetooth
Wireless
Graphic card (up to MXM Type II - Ati x700 and NV6600 256MB so far)
Remote control
Expansion ports (serial, more usb etc.)
So everything but mainboard, touchpad and ports.:)
