2.0 processor or 2 gig of RAM

Question:
2.0 processor or 2 gig of RAM
I am configuring a dell laptop and need to get it up to 999 inorder to get a 300$ off coupon. I was considering going from a 1.66 dual core to a 2.0 dual core. I could do that or i oculd go from 1 gig ram to 2 gigs of ram. Is that overkill? Which would give me better performance in daily computing activities.

The CPU upgrade as in normal activities, you're not going to need 2GB of RAM. However, I'd upgrade the CPU to 1.83 and get a HD upgrade instead.

Re: 2.0 processor or 2 gig of RAM
well, both are pretty much overkill. you will see a slight increase from 1.66 to 2.0 ghz in everyday tasks. same goes for having 2 gigs of ram, if you are just doing basic things such as wordprocessing, surfing internet, watching dvds....however, i would say go with the 2.0 ghz b/c you cannot upgrade that aftermarket without voiding your warranty. the ram you can easily buy and upgrade yourself without trouble if you wanted to in the future.

yeah thats true i forgot about that. The RAM is even cheaper when i buy from newegg. Why do u say just go to 1.8 and upgrade hd? I was considering leaving it at 1.66 and going to a 7200 rpm HD but after reading some forums people dont seem to notice the practical difference between the 2 after using both. So i figured just use that money and get a 2.0

and yes for my useage which is only surfing web, typing, downloads and music/vids. But i wanted to get as much out of this as i can because i plan on keeping it for a while and dont want to get outdated too badly.

this is just me, but you will notice more "speediness" with a 7200 rpm hd and 1.83 ghz than having a 2.0 ghz and 5400 rpm.....i agree with reize. but others might disagree.

go for CPU.
It's easy to upgrade the ram and HDD when you feel the need.

Re: 2.0 processor or 2 gig of RAM
However, in regular use you're not going to notice much of a difference between the T2400 and T2500, the latter of which you pay a premium for. Assuming you won't upgrade later, 1.83 and better HD is the best option.
Even if you are though, I would wait until merom to upgrade, then upgrade the CPU.

I read an article this month (or end of april) that said that windows vista is going to "require" 2 gigs of ram if you want to game on your computer.
Id definatly invest in the 2 gig margin now.
Finally, the hard drive upgrade really does not compare to ram or cpu. Sure a higher spindle speed is awesome, but definatly get 2 gigs of ram if you can.

Re: 2.0 processor or 2 gig of RAM
RAM is easy to upgrade if he wants to, and he's talking about getting ram directly from dell which is a no-no.
Normal usage does not equate to an OS that isn't coming along for a while, and even then he didn't say he was going to upgrade to Vista, nor did he say he was gaming.
That's also speculation, until Vista comes out we don't know if it's going to require 2GB of RAM to run.
