Charging a laptop battery OUT of the laptop

Question:
Charging a laptop battery OUT of the laptop
The story-
I have an old, beat up Gateway 1450 that i resurrected from the dead by completely disassembling it and re-soldering the power connector back to the board (and lots of cleaning of cat hair from fans and other internals). I got a new battery for it, and it was up and running!
This was ~8 months ago. It worked fairly well, even though i had to "play/wiggle the power connector soemtimes to get it to seat properly. Well the wiggling and playing got more and more frequent, as the ac adaptor plug was failing also, until finally the metal part of the plug broke right off.
I got a replacement ac adaptor, but this one had even more trouble finding the "sweet spot" to provide power.
Thinking the inside connector was again loose, I disassembled and played with super glue and solder again. This time, it didn't work.
The laptop will still boot up with the battery, so i know it works. But the battery will not charge, as something is definitely wrong either in the connector or other internal power components.
So I have a working laptop that I can't charge.
The question-
Does anyone know of any way to charge a laptop battery without it being in the laptop?
My searching has found that toshiba and sony have external chargers. But I dont' see any for any other brands or generic ones.
Any ideas? :hardfind:

You might try Newegg for some "travel" charger adaptors, but I don't really know. Generally the battery is charged inside of a laptop. You may want to think about getting a new laptop if you cannot solve this problem.

My dad has a laptop (circa 1996), which had an external battery charger... I haven't seen such a thing in a very long time though.

Re: Charging a laptop battery OUT of the laptop
It's not a huge loss. Only cost me the new battery, and my time. But it was fun to rip a dead laptop open and have a working laptop for nearly 8 months.
Resurrected laptop - ~$100 for the battery.
new laptop - ~$2000....
you can see the dilemma... ;-)
