gaming laptop for 3 years

Question:
gaming laptop for 3 years
Hey, I was interested in getting a decent gaming laptop that will last me 3 years. I've been looking at laptops for a while now, but since I have very specific needs I thought you guys might be helpful. I figured hauling my desktop to and from college was a bit of a hassle.
So basically I'm willing to sacrifice a lot for a good GPU and RAM (and of course a decent processor); also, if upgrading components myself would save money, that is also welcome (this includes RAM). I will be getting this laptop around August so I have some time to wait if you think that will be beneficial.
1) What is your budget?
$1000-$1500 (but if I can get a very good deal for around $1600 or so I'm up for that too)
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
No preference whatsoever.. whatever is cheapest I guess.
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
Gaming for the next 3 years and other everyday usage
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
Leaving it on my desk
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
If it can play without lag any games for the next 3 years, it should be fine. I'm a very casual gamer but I want the ones that I do play to not lag on reasonable settings.
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
Nope
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
It's going to be on my desk, so I could live with no battery, but some would be nice.
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
I prefer online :)
9) What country are you buying this in?
United States
Screen Specifics
10) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
No preference whatsoever
11) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
glossy would be nice, but again, whatever is cheaper
Build Quality and Design
12) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
not really; I usually like machines to be understated, but again I'll go for whatever is cheapest
13) How long do you want this laptop to last?
3 years, no more, (hopefully) no less
Notebook Components
14) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB?
60GB-80GB will be plenty
15) Do you need a DVD, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-R drive?
I'd rather have it be able to burn both DVDs and CDs, but I could live with just reading both (and maybe CD-RW).
As you can see my needs are a little too specific; I'd rather not do too much upgrading (as I am infinitely inexperienced in things of this nature), but if it really saves a lot of money I'll.. go for it.
Thanks a lot in advance; I'm confident I came to the right place for help!

Re: gaming laptop for 3 years
the asus s96j seems to fit your needs perfectly. it is a barebones system that you can choose to upgrade yourself to save money. it also has the best gpu available in a 15.4" notebook, the x1600 (6800go doesn't count....). i think the cheapest barebones system can be found at geared2play.com.

What about dell e1705 with coupon -750$ u can buy at very low price

Re: gaming laptop for 3 years
I am currently considering the E1705 and the S96J and if size is not a factor, I would get the E1705 (Size is a factor for me). You can get a 3 year warranty and a 7800 (more future proof than an X1600 because it's faster) for about 1500. That's about the same as an S96j similarly configured but your 3dmark scores (tweaked to the max) jump from 4k on the S96J to 5.8k or thereabouts on the E1705.
Now I'm starting to convince myself to go back to a 17" laptop...DOH

Re: gaming laptop for 3 years
Thats title is kind of unrealistic. I can believe 1 year. 2 years is pushing it but being able to game on the same laptop for 3 years would require a 3000$ investment to buy a folding computer from clevo alienware sager and the like. WHy do that when you can spend half for a decked out asus and buy a new mobile notebook one 1.5 year later . Better battery life, better everything i definitely agree with you. what the consumers coming here for advice just cant catch, because theyre using their new car buying skills, is that the more you spend on a laptop the worse a deal it is.
a sager 5670 will not game nearly as long as an asus s96j. the 0 generation 2x speed leap of a 7900 gtx will not keep games compatible any longer with your machine. in 4 years, the 7900 gtx and the x1600 will run the same games, not the fear 3s but the sim 12.
but the asus s96j comes with something really cool. It comes with $1000. $1000 is what youll need to play games on your laptop in 3 years. So while joe blow has his sager 5670 in 3 years with the cigarette ash and the cracked lcd, youll have another asus s96j, only with a quad core turion a 300 gb hd and the ati 9billion with positronic hypergaming technology.
It just takes to many words to explain this. All these people wanting to spend 3k on a laptop are foolish.
a gaming laptop costs 1500 or less. Thats why youre about to see a lot of sales, a new one just hit.
