Question:
Advantages of dual core Duo over pentium M
Alright, i hope by posting this people will get an idea for what the new centrino with dual processing, called centrino duo is.
Firstly, you all hopefully realized that the name centrino did not only apply to the processor, but implied that the notebook had a certain wireless card, chipset, and processor (the pentium m). This is infact what the name "centrino duo" implies, only the 3 components are newer and work more efficiently. The overall architecture is more improved aswell.
The components are:
Intel Core Duo processor* (yonah)
Intel 945 Express Chipset
Intel 3945ABG Wireless
The new design, although still based on the 130nm process, does consume less power due to its lower voltage. This means that in some cases there is a battery life increase due to the new components and architecture.
I won't talk so much about the new chipset and wireless solution and i'll focus on the new processor - core duo. In case you didn't notice this means it contains 2 core processors... The 2mb of cache is shared by both cores. While concidering this new architecture, realize that to make a noticible improvment, your tasks must utilise the two cores. That being said here are some new results. These were tested at the same clock speeds and compare the pentium m v. the duo:
25% increase for overall buisness apps
87% for 3d rendering and video editing!
36% increase for photoshop cs2
64% increase for audio coding
3% increase for gaming, sometimes no increase but no loss.
The advantages of the duo are clearly are shown. Clearly most gaming tasks don't fully utilise the dual core processing like 3d rendering and video editing does. This is due to support in the applications. Also if you are running more than one application at a time (multitasking) it makes sense to use dual core processors... and im sure there is a significant increase in performance.
So, im sorry to say the dual core technology doesn't help the intense gamer, however helps with applications that utilise the 2 cores. The pentium m is still a very powerfull processor, especially if you need the power for gaming.
Btw this is my first "review" if you can call it that - and the information was derived from anandtech. I thought i might sum up the part about intel's new dual processor.

This is a nice summary for someone like me who didn't want to read through pages and pages of information to get the same basic idea. Thanks!
That's quit an increase in performance for video editing and audio encoding. I do a little bit of both, but not enough to make me consider the dual core right when it comes out.

Great post, zenzulu. I'm sure many will find this a great summary.

thanks, its great to help people - especially when i could be wasting more time on the internet searching for a new laptop. However, thats how i aquired that information in the first place :)

Wait a second - Yonah is supposed to be based on 90nm not 130nm. BTW - games made for dual-core CPU in the future will yield significantly better performance that the ones do now.

Re: Advantages of dual core Duo over pentium M
Yes, yonah is based off the 130nm process, however there are other changes that make yonah consume less power than the m. The change, for example, from ICH6 to ICH7M (those are controller hubs) uses lower voltages. It isn't exactly yonah that is increasing the battery life, it is the centrino duo architecture in combination with the processor that helps. There have also been tests done on this - and keep in mind that they don't show huge increases in battery life.
I didn't know that dual core processors were going to be adjusted for games in the future... it makes sense only im wondering why no one has done that yet.

Yes, yonah is based off the 130nm process,
No its not. The chipset is still manufactured on a 130 nm process, but the processor (Yonah) is 65 nm.

Not to nitpick but it would be a good idea to have some sources ;)
Regardless, you should most likely mention overall system performance. You will notice far better multitask performance.
And all this comes at no additional power cost.

Re: Advantages of dual core Duo over pentium M
Oh right! sorry about that... i read yonah when i should have read what it said - "The 945 Express chipset is still built on a 130nm process".
Anyway the source is from http://anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=2663
its a good idea to include sources :)
sry about that...

I believe intel is migrating its chipset ot 90nm platform soon. Wouldn't it be better to wait for that transition to happen.
Is there an online store and a BM store where we can buy core duo notebooks immediately (if its online then they should ship fairly soon).
