Do I want an Acer (FAQ attached)
Sorry if this is a duplicate post... I got an error message when I tried to submit.
Hello. I have been reading the forums and reviews here and elsewhere for days; have reached info overload! Hope you can help.
1) What is your budget?
$1000 - $1500
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
Either of these:
b. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
c. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
Multiple applications simultaneously:
- MS Word and Excel, lots of cutting and pasting, calculations, etc.
- Internet surfing, usually 5 or 6 active browser windows, videos in browser, photos
- Music playing
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
- Mostly sitting on the couch (!), but some travel, too.
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
No games.
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
I'm liking the Acer TravelMate series because 1) not too much extra junk software, it seems from the reviews and spces, and 2) lots of types of ports and connectors, 3) I like the curved keyboard
I've been looking at the TravelMate4674 from zipzoomfly for $1510.
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
I'm usually near an outlet, but 3 hours of battery would be nice
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
No.
9) What country are you buying this in?
US
10) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
No preference.

11) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
Probable matte, but not sure.
12) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
Not so much. OK, maybe a little.
13) How long do you want this laptop to last?
3 years at least; future-proofing and expandiability very important
14) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB?
60 ok; I have external hard drives
15) Do you need a DVD, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-R drive?
R/W CD and DVD wbn
I want something really fast and powerful. There is nothing that makes me crazier than watching the little harddrive light go on... and stay on... when I open another window or application, and I HATE waiting for apps to open. (I confess that I am currently on an eMachine, old and tired and sloooow and heavy).
Future-proof and expandability are important.
Availability of extended warranty is important.
FAT32 versus NTFS... important?
Thanks.

The ASUS W3v is a fast little bugger, though its a Centrino instead of the newer Core Duo, for $1299 with a rebate, it can't be beat :)
