Question:
Build or Buy, I need some suggestions....
Need some help either picking out components to build or buy off the shelf a laptop for a mobile DJ. I should add that I've built plenty of desktop systems in my life, I use to own a small PC company so building one isn't a problem. I just haven't built a laptop before, therefore am not up to speed on what I should use.
1) What is your budget?
Would prefer to stay as close to $1000 as possible, willing to go up to $1500
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
c. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
Music production/performance. I'm a DJ, and am going to mainly use this to perform live as well as my music production.
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
Taking it with me, but weight is not an issue.
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
Possibly, but 95% of the time will be running multiple applications on it that have moving waveforms. Would like decent graphics to visualize this.
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
Not really. Just want the best bang for my buck.
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
N/A. Sure, want the most possible, but not an issue.
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
No, as long as the reviews of it are good.
9) What country are you buying this in?
USA
Screen Specifics
10) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
Any of the below. Will probably need to run multiple programs side by side.
e. WXGA+ = Widescreen eXtended Graphics Array+; 1440x900; This resolution is offered on 17" widescreen notebooks and is comparable to WXGA in terms of text and icon size versus available screen real estate. Popular for movie viewing due to support for widescreen.
f. WSXGA+ = Widescreen Super eXtended Graphics Array; 1680x1050; This resolution is comparable to SXGA in that it offers a middle ground between WXGA/WXGA+ and WUXGA. Popular for movie viewing due to support for widescreen.
g. WUXGA = Widescreen Ultra eXtended Graphics Array; 1920x1200; This resolution offers the smallest viewable text and images while offering the greatest amount of screen real estate.
11) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen? See below for explanation.
Either.
Build Quality and Design
12) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
Not really, but would prefer it didn't look like a piece of crap.
13) How long do you want this laptop to last?
As long as possible
Notebook Components
14) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB?
As fat as possible.
15) Do you need a DVD, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-R drive?

I like the D820. The magnesium case on it should offer good protection as you travel with it.
