Please help me decide which is a better bang for the buck.
1.8 Pentium M D600, 512M ram , ATI Mobility RADEON 32meg
---or----
2.8 Pentium 4 5160, 512M ram, 64MB NVIDIA GEFORCE FX
the other specs are the same (ie: HD size, WiFi, DVD-ROM, etc..)

depends on what you're using it for.

The 5160 is going to better in the video performance department because of a better graphics hard but the P 4 is a huge drawback due to the fact that it is horrible at batt. life and will get hot.
If you arent going to game, opt for the D600. If you do want to game, look at a better computer. Bare min. for gaming you would want an X300 or 200M xpress chip. You can configure an I6000 series for a bit more money, but a lot better in performance. Fill out an FAQ to help you even more.

I didn't fill out the FAQ since I was doing a ".vs" comparison.
I suppose I should have.. sorry. :(
I do not plan on hardcore gaming on the laptop due to my budget.
I will primarily use this unit for development (C#), multitrack audio
recording (via PCMCIA card sound card and adobe Audition) and general net/email/MS office apps. I use Photoshop sometimes (I have CS and 5.5).
I will view the occasional DVD as well as play the occasional Quake 2 deathmatch.
Battery and weight mean nothing to me. I want the most performance for the $$.
My tiny budget is about $700.
Thanks again.

I would avoid the 5150/5160 at all costs. Go to dells website and search the forums for the list of problems with the motherboard. I had mine replaced once under warranty and it needs it again. Thats why I am buying an IBM this time around.
Also the battery life is horrible and runs hot due to the heat sink collecting dust and not venting properly. I had the heat sink replaced and had to blow it out regularly with compressed air to keep it clean. I often ran so hot it would shut down due to the heat and once the dust built up bad enough it would not even run while placed on the AC vent! Also had other weird random shut down issues and reinstalling the operating system did not fix it.

a 'vs' really limits your options. you should out the 'what should i buy' sticky.

I would say save up some more money instead of buying right now if possible. Prices should come down a bit and if you bump it up 200 bucks, youll get yourself in a nicely equiped HP system that will do what you need it to do.
If you need one right now, try pricing a compaq that is advertised for 499 at hp.com. You should be able to work something like that into your budget. M2000Z is the model name. X200M graphics card. Brightview screen. 60 gig hd, all for bout 700 dollars.

If you need a computer for $700 or under, the best thing to do is to go to ebay, and look for a dell 20% off outlet coupon ($3-5). Then go to dell outlet and find a notebook.
I got my XPS M140 loaded with...
PM 1.73 (533FSB)
60 GB HD
1GB DDR II
DVD+/- Duel Layer burner
Built in Wifi/ Blutooth
9 cell battery (up to 7 hrs)
Windows XP Media Center 2005
It cost me just under $700 then + 9$ for shipping. I think the total was $706.80.
Today I looked at dell outlet, and with the coupon you could get the dell Inspiron 6000 with the PM 1.73 , 512 RAM, 60GB HD, CD-RW / DVD, Wi-fi for just under $600! + tax and shipping... WHAT A GREAT DEAL!!
And the PM 1.73 should be equivilent to a P4 3.2 thus superior to the 2.8 Ghz.
