Question:
I'm in the market...& I want a double
Hi guys, I've been hovering for about a month now but I am no closer to actually making a decision. I need to buy 2 laptops, one for me & one for my mum  .
My current plan is to buy 2 of the same models with different specs to suit our needs (so, I get the better one :D )
1) Budget - AUD$3000 (USD$2250) tops. each.
2) Size - Thin and Light (13" - 14") or Mainstream (15" - 16")
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
Office applications (Word, Excel, ACT!, MYOB), movies, tv shows, music. I would really like to be able to play games again too  , to a decent gfx card (X1400 minimun) 256mb would be nice.
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
It will spend about half of its life on my desk/bed, but I definatly will be taking it to uni & work.
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
Yup, I dont know though. Doom3 level stuff or better i expect. Oh, CS source.
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
Thinkpad, Asus, Fujitsu, Sony
Here's the kicker. I like Thinkpads, & I hear the others are good. I know Thinkpads lineup like the back of my hand now, but i can't order a custom one here (Australia) so they exceed my budget for the specs i desire. [insert profanities regarding Lenovo's sales system]
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
I seem to be surviving on 1.5 now (old batt). I liked it when i had 5hrs, but its not a major issue. Say 3hrs min?
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
nope.
9) What country are you buying this in?
Australia. I dont mind buying overseas.
Screen Specifics
10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?
Prefer widescreen, not a dealbreaker, but they are nicer to use in my opinon.
11) screen resolutions:
SXGA - 1400x1050
UXGA - 1600x1200
or
WSXGA+ - 1680x1050
WUXGA - 1920x1200
I like High res, I *really* like it. Alot. more more more.:D
12) glossy/non-glossy screen?
I dont know. I think non-glossy, but its not a major issue with me. Screen quality & brightness must be good though.
Build Quality and Design
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
No. I prefer one to last. I won't turn down something sexy though
14) How long do you want this laptop to last?
2-3yrs I think, but who can read the future? Nice to have the option of continuing to use it instead of being forced to upgrade.
Notebook Components
15) Hard drive space?
80G min, 120 is nicer.
16) optical drive?
DVD-RW
I was planning on buying a T60p without any wireless, HDD, RAM, or BT to slash the cost, then buy them cheaper (using quality parts). I can't do that off Lenovo Australia, but i have no issues doing that for other vendors if its cost effective.
Gotta be a Duo 1.8G or better too.
Must have a good warranty - 3yrs, I can do student rates off some brands, & I'm buying 2 remember?
Cheers
Edit - Ive done some searching, The Asus W3J, A6Jm, A8Jm all look nice. any suggestions/warnings?

The A8jm or W3j are good options, as you mentioned.
Also, check out LG laptops.

The Samsung X60 seires would make a great fit for you - WSXGA+, ATI X1600 graphics, and a Core Duo. There's a discussion on it in the Samsung forum:

Thanks, I'm trying to find a high res WSXGA A6Jm or A6Ja, but finding it difficult in Australia for some reason. I'm looking at the X60 too, I may have luck with my uni on that front...
Heres hoping

If only the suppliers here could supply I woulnt have suck a hard time deciding.
I Have been unsucessful finding an A6Jm or A6Ja in WSXGA so far, they are only sticking them in WXGA. I dont see the point in getting one of them if i can get a A8Jm, same res but smaller...
I see the Z61m's are out, sigh, i want one sooo bad. but if i go that route i wont see it for months, thats not really an option.
back to the searching, curse my inability to make a decision...
