Question:
512 ram or 1 gig? big different?
I can either pay 839 with tax for
1.66 dual core
integrated intel 950
dvd burner
Intel pro wireless
40 Gb Harddrive
14 inch wide screen
1 Gig of ram
or 775 for the same system but with 512mb of RAM. 64$ for the extra 512mb of ram. Is that worth it? i dont think i will nececisarily need it but if thats a good deal for it id like to have it. Is there a noticeable difference between 512mb and 1 gig of ram?

Re: 512 ram or 1 gig? big different?
depends on what u use ur laptop for i guess. If you ever play any games on it, or open lots of applications at the same time, you will notice a difference.
ie. I play warcraft 3 on my laptop and it loads roughly 40% more quickly with the extra 512MB I installed on the system.
Check if it's cheaper to upgrade separately

In windows XP, 1gb runs much smoother. Anything above that makes little difference except during certain games.

512mb will struggle in games these days. Windows can easily hog up 250MB+ without doing anything.
Even when I play an old game like wc3 you'll notice a big difference. Ht the windows key after a long session of gaming with 512mb and your machine will grind to a halt.

Re: 512 ram or 1 gig? big different?
In my mind 512 mb is like the "new 256 mb." 512 is the new low standard of ram, IE the lowest new laptops come with it standard.
I would highly recomend the 1 gigabyte of ram, there is a gigantic difference in overall use. You can handle more tasks, more smoothly in windows, and if you game, your graphics card will get a very well needed boost. (Graphics cards are only as powerful as the ram you pair it with (speed wise and size wise)).
Now, talking about gaming:
If one actually upgrades from 1 gig to 2 gig there will be hardly any difference in basic windows application performance levels. They will seem nearly identical. Now, speculation is saying that you need at least 512 mb to run vista (that is bare minimum) and 1 gig will just be cutting it clean. I have read an article that gaming on vista will basically require 2 gig's of ram, so that may be somthing to think about. However, if your not into gaming, stick to 1 gig for now, you can always add more.
The long and short of what I said is this: you will not be disapointed with 1 gig, and IMO it should be the absolute minimum if you want good basic performance. I would highly recommend 2 gig's if you want to play games and keep on top of the new ones for a few years.

Definitely get 1GB. There's no question there.
