Gaming

Question:
Gaming
I just had a question about dedicated cards. I play command and conquer and counterstrike. Do I need dedicated graphics?
My friend has a 700m and he plays counterstrike flawlessly (with a 1.6 pentium and 512 ram). If I mainly just play that game then do I need dedicated graphics?

do you mean, do you need dedicated graphics?

Re: Gaming
Do you mean do you want dedicated graphics? Integrated graphics are the lowest possible solution to graphics on a laptop. I haven't played counterstrike, bit depending on which C and C you are playing you may be better with a dedicated card. I have a 128 MB ATI x300, which is a lower end dedicated GPU, and overclocked it runs Generals and Zero Hour well, I am not sure if integrated would cut it well for those games. You could run them, you would just have to bump down the graphics to low most likely. I would reccomend going for at least some sort of dedicated GPU if possible, especially for when the new C and C comes out ! :)

Re: Gaming
Yea sorry I meant do I need dedicated graphics.
Yea he has it on low settings but it plays fine. The only problem is I want a 14 inch model which does not offer much in terms of graphics in my price range (1500 U.S. max). I also want at least 4 hours of battery life.
Can you guys think of any 14 inch systems under 1500 that have decent video cards? I cant, except the M100 but I think that Toshibas notebooks have so so build quality.
The dell E1405 is just such a good deal with the coupon. For 1300 I can get:
T2500
2 gb ram
100 gb 7200 rpm hd

well, there is the asus a8jm if you raise your budget to $1550 (minus the bt at portableone), you will get the 7600go. i hear that the compal hel30 will be coming out soon and it will also have the 7600go and will be customizable. other then that, there would just be the upcoming hp dv2000t....

Re: Gaming
If your willing to go up to 15.4" the Asus S96j is a sweet deal! Go to powernotebooks.com . You can get it with a X1600 for under $1100! Also the 700m or integrated graphics run games like CS 1.6 just fine. Just try and play CSS or HL2 and you will get like 3FPS.

Re: Gaming
yes you will need a dedicated graphics card to game
dont buy a laptop without one. I feel regardless of what it costs, a laptop with a integrated gpu is actually no more software compatible than a laptop that was made about 4 years ago with a ati 9000 32mb.
its only advantage in speed over say um, a 1.2 ghz old school pentium m with ati 9000 from 4 years ago would be in something cpu only taxing like encoding a video.
they all open web pages.
If you want to game you need a dedicated gpu.
