Question:
If someone sold a 5 GHz P4 equiv CPU . . .
Just a quick question . . . OK, we are all excited about dual core notebooks . . .
Imagine for a moment that someone (I'll call them "Company C") had a single core CPU for sale that ran at 5 GHz (or was equivalent to a P4 of that speed) and dissipated 25 W (something comparable to Sonoma/Dothan or Turion).
Would anyone care about dual cores now coming out ?

dual cores would still have the better performance b/c they process two streams at once, not just one. so i would still want the dual core over the higher clocked cpu.

I am not exactly very good at all this stuff yet, so I don't know all the facts. But can someone tell me about when they will be release in every company and also, will they be over $2,000?

And how long a wait is it, what I really am looking for is like a Sony SZ for ~$1,700.

I'd take the single core CPU - I'm not a big multitasker. The fastest single core CPU will give me the best performance in any one application (single threaded - as in, games).
Intriguing question. ;)

Is it possible to over clock a P4 3.8 to 5 Ghz? I have seen where people have overclocked there PC by about 20-25%. But from 3.8 to 5 is rite in the 25% range, so it should be possible?!

Thermal output for a Prescott P4 would soon cook that chip to death.
Theoretically it can be done, but you might need to take a second mortgage on your house or something to pay for it.

The FX-60 runs theoretically at 5ghz and is dual core. Ofcourse its not a laptop CPU, and it runs on 110W. I'd take the 5ghz dual cpu any day...I just won't justify the enormous cost is owning one. :)
Running two cores has the ability (with appropriate software) to post 50%+ increases from the fastest processors today. The FX-60 in Quake4 runs 53% faster than the single core FX-55. That is a HUGE leap in performance...and all from a 0.4ghz speed boost and most importantly two cores.
As of now, going dualcore is still relatively pointless but the whole industry is starting to make the change...soon you'll never want to own another single core again. Soon dualcore won't just be for the multitasker, it'll be for people who desire speed in single applications...like gamers. When all new software begins to be written in code that optimizes the use of both cores, then it'll begin to be obvious why a dualcore is so desirable. Until then, it's really unuseful for the majority of us...kind of like computers back in the 70's. Something big needs to happen, like word processing did for the computer, to make it worthwhile.

I wouldn't take it, it would probably melt my neighborhood

The record is 7.2GHz by a Japanese man.
