Advice on Laptop for mobile use in UK
1) What is your budget?
Approximately £1000 inc VAT.
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
Either Ultraportable; 12" screen or less or Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen will be fine I think. I'd prefer an ultraportable but I realise that they are mostly out of my budget.
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
- General Internet stuff - web browsing, email, IM.
- Remote administration.
- Connecting to many different wifi and wired networks.
- Watching the occasional movie on DVD or hard disk.
- Programming.
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
Taking it to different places. I have a desktop to leave on my desk :p
I have a part-time job as an IT Consultant so I have to travel around London on the tube and buses to different offices so it has to be light enough for me to carry around with me - I'm thinking 4.5lbs (2kg) max although I may be way off on that so correct me if I'm wrong.
I plan to travel out of London on the train with it and also take it to university occasionally.
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
No.
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
I don't want a Mac. Other than that, this is why I'm asking you guys. I'd like a laptop with excellent build quality.
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
About 3. The more the better but I don't think I will usually be away from a mains socket for more than about 3 hours at a time.
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
No I don't mind.
9) What country are you buying this in?
UK
10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?
Widescreen by a small margin for watching movies but I wouldn't discount standard screens.
11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
I don't mind.
12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
I don't mind.
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
No.
14) How long do you want this laptop to last?
3-4 years at least. 5+ would be nice.
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB?
Doesn't matter. 40GB should be enough - any extra is welcome.
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?
I could make do without if it's a decent ultraportable that meets all my other requirements. If it does have an optical drive, it needs to be able to play DVD's but I have no requirements for writing.
17) Other
RAM is not important as long as it's expandable - I plan to buy the cheapest model and buy extra RAM from Crucial.
It's quite important that it has a solid keyboard as I tend to hit the keys pretty hard :p

also the dell d620 Lenovo X60 is unfortunately above my budget at around £1250. The Asus W5F is about the same price :(
The 3000v100 looks a bit too big and weighs about 3kg.
The Dell D620 was one I was considering and I still quite like the look of. On the other hand, I've heard bad things about Dell's build quality.

Dell D620 has a very good build quality.
I didn't suggest it because I heard D620/D820 are a little bit expensive in UK, but if it fits your budget it's a good choice.
