Question:
Dell D620 vs Dell XPS M1210
Basically i want a laptop for under $1100 for school that is portable to take everywhere, but has enough power to play games. I was wondering what you would pick between the D620 or the M1210. The xps is a little bit expensive, but i can wait till the end of summer so the price should go down by then. I like the d620 because it has good battery life (With 9cell) and is fairly portable. The Xps in nice becuase its got a camera and more power. They are relatively the same weight, but the d620 has a bigger screen (the xps subsequentely has a smaller screen). Also the XPS seems to have a pretty bad battery life (for my needs) of 3hrs. Which one should i get? (I am open to other suggestions but these two seem to be the best so far, also if you do suggest somthing i perfere laptops with discrete videocards 4 teh gamin)
1) What is your budget?
$1100
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
a. Ultraportable; 12" screen or less
b. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
somthing that i can easily carry
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
web browsing, office applications, would really enjoy if it was capable of doing photoshop and all that, i would really love it if i could do a little gaming, but i don't want to sacrifice weight or price for that.
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
School, vacations and such. Needs to be portable (i have a good desktop for @ home)
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
I would LOVE for it to be able to play bf2 (i am probably dreaming), even if ion low. However i won't sacrifice weight or price for that (as i said before). It would be cool if it did have a dedicated GFX card (even if it isn't uBEr 1337)
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
not really, hopefull something customisable,
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
Minimum of 3 hrs doing web and office apps
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
if its a really cool one :p
9) What country are you buying this in?
Teh USA
Screen Specifics
10) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
not picky aboutit, i don't really care too much
11) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen? See below for explanation.
umm, it would be niceif i could see it in the sun/out doors, but again, its not a must
Build Quality and Design
12) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
it shouldn't be really ugly
13) How long do you want this laptop to last?
2-4 years hopefully, should be able to run Vista (again not on full performance eyecandy)
Notebook Components
14) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB?
No smaller than 60gigs plz.
15) Do you need a DVD, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-R drive?
It needs to be able to burn and play CDs and watch DVDs, I don't mind the extra features tho :p
Please state any additional features you need. If you don't know how to answer a question or don't care about what it is asking then just say so!
Ummm....I dono, a camera might be cool but again, it's not a must by any means

If you want to game, the XPS is clearly the better choice. I wouldn't count on it going down by this summer especially if it is really popular.

Re: Dell D620 vs Dell XPS M1210
With your budget and specs, looks like you might be waiting a while for the M1210 to come down. As of right now your looking at $1300 for the base system w/o the camera, dedicated graphics or DVD burner. Add those 3 and it's gonna jump to 1800 bucks. Oh yeah...and don't count on any coupons for it since it's part of the XPS series.
The 620 seems like it might be more of what you're looking for, as w/ coupons, you should pretty easily be able to get it down to the $1100 level w/ just about everything you want.

to add with Zazonz said.. the base model XPS m1210 w/integrated gpu could meet your price range.. but not the one with the dedicated.. that one is $1800 right now and its unlikely it'll drop below 1500 any time soon.

Has anybody suggested the Asus S96J? You have a lot of choices as to what to put inside right around your budget.

Edit: Dunno why they currently don't have higher capacity hard drives right now. You might want to E-mail Power Notebooks and ask if you're interested in it.

Re: Dell D620 vs Dell XPS M1210
it's a bit heavy....around 6.5 lb. i don't know if or when the compal will come out, but something tells me that it will be a decent price. probably with barebones around $700.

I guess i will be sticking with the d620 then, unless something revolutionary comes out over the summer.
