Express Cards? What do they do?

Question:
Express Cards? What do they do?
Hi
I have a Dell M140 and it has an Express Card slot. Dell puts a 'blank' card in the slot to keep the slot clean. My question is what do you use an Express Card for? I'm sort of a low-tech guy, so keep any answers in low-tech lingo. :D
If I'm in the wrong forum, please say so and point me to the correct area.
Thanks

You have the correct forum. ;)
The ExpressCard is the next generation PC Card. It has a faster bus speed - up to 250Mbps.
There are only a handful of ExpressCard devices now, but now that more laptops feature them, especially the ones from HP and newer Dell's like your XPS M140, we'll see them come out in larger numbers.

Yeah, at the moment there's almost nothing. We saw new TV tuners that use the slot though, so there's finally going to be new accessories soon. I'm sure an air card will come out too, since many notebooks are abandoning PCMCIA altogether.

ChazMan & Brian...thanks for the reply, but again...what does an Express Card do?...What do you use it for? Is it so new, that it is used for nothing, as Brian seemed to say?

Well, we know, it's just that it is kind of obvious what a PC Card does. Just look in a store or something, you'll see them.
Commonly used PCMCIA cards:
-Ethernet/Modem
-Wireless card
-Firewire/USB ports
-TV Tuners
-Sound cards

The only thing obvious is that I won't be asking questions here anymore.

It was not intended to be an offense. Don't forget that you are always welcome here . . ask any questions you like.
Perhaps I assumed too much in that one instance . .
At OfficeDepot, Best Buy, Circuit City, Newegg.com, etc., you can find PCMCIA cards.
XPSGuy - unfortunately, there won't be any video cards, because the bus is not nearly fast enough.
