1) What is your budget?
under 1700USD

d. Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen

Apple can suck it. I can't stand ATI and their ****ty linux support.

no preference, I guess widescreen is cool these days

Widescreen

prefer newest tech available so probably dual layer dvd burn
17) WEIGHT WEIGHT WEIGHT?
My A21p is 7.9-8lbs. I hate that much weight. I'd like to get something 1.5 to 2lbs lighter.

I'd like to see dedicated 256+ mb. better performance than my 5900 Ultra I have in my desktop. My guess is probably 7600 or better.

Linux should install on the laptop without too many issues.
20) ready to buy?
I'm willing to wait a month or two for something to come out that meets my needs.

Hey have a look at www.powernotebooks.com and their PowerPro L 8:15 has a 7600go 15.4in wide screen and you can get it for less than 1700$ with most stuff built in:)
p.s. it weighs in at 6.5lb

Re: <~6.5lbs, nvidia, some gaming
wow that is pretty close. I think the only thing i'm not all that crazy about is that its only WXGA. hrrm. dang i think if that thing came in WSXGA+ i might be buying a new laptop as we speak :( I've looked on their site before I'll poke around some more maybe i just missed an option.
if alienware would just yank their heads outta there butt and move to 7xxx series on their area-51 15.4" they'd have my money already. that and make up their minds on how much their laptops weigh lol.

Re: <~6.5lbs, nvidia, some gaming
you won't find any 15.4" with wsxga and 7600go or better. for 17", there is the dell e1705 or hp dv8000t. but they are definitely not 6.5 lb....

that's correct. it is matte instead of glossy though. if you could go with 14", there is the portableone mx (asus a8jm).
