A great fit for your needs is the HP dv1000t:

It starts at $569 right now, and has a glossy display and great build quality.
The Dell E1405 is another choice, but the HP will offer superior quality and design at a slightly elevated price.

the dell 1405 probably has the better battery life though. for the previous models of hps, you can get around 6 hours with the extended battery, or so i heard.

Re: Budget Notebook with battery life needed
As far as battery life on the HP goes, how's the Celeron. I know that the Core Duo is awesome, but I am kinda needing a laptop that will get me from point A to point B with good battery life for lowest cost possible.

Re: Budget Notebook with battery life needed
i would get a sempron over a celeron for battery life, so take a look at the compa v2000z, though make sure you get the extended battery if you want to get around 3.5 or more hours. have you checked out the dell coupon codes for the e1405? you could get it for around $700 with decent specs
