Question:
5400rpm or 7200rpm?
I'm planning on buying an A8Jm, and intend on doing some light gaming on it.
My options for harddrives are a 100GB 7200rpm drive or a 160GB 5400rpm drive. My current notebook has a 4200rpm drive for reference.
It's hard to say no to an extra 60 Gigabytes of storage, in particular because I will be dual-booting windows/linux on this laptop, so the more space the better, but how much of a performance hit am I taking with the slower drive? also, keep in mind that almost all linux games (doom/nwn/armyops, etc, etc) run straight off the hard drive without using the CD.

Re: 5400rpm or 7200rpm?
You will see faster booting up and faster loading for your games and other HD intensive work. Its about a 15% difference I'd say. If you can manage without the extra space then I'd go for speed. Also expect to lose some battery life with the faster drive and possibly gain a bit more heat.

This is negligable, if at all.

i would get the 5400 because it is significantly more storage. also, 7200 drives run hotter. also, 5400 is also an upgrade from your current hard drive so youll be fine speed perception wise

Re: 5400rpm or 7200rpm?
I upgraded my HD from 4,200 RPM to 5,400 RPM and I noticed a difference in the battery life, about 20 mins lower. So if you plan to get a 7,200 rpm hd, you will noticed a difference in the battery life.
