Question:
If I aim to use notebook to record my class, what's the minimum requirement please?
Dear all,
I have a plan to purchase one laptop which attachs with Web Camera (or build-in one) and I would use it to records lectures from classes in my school.
Once the class finish, I would like to encode it with XViD encoder to compress it as an small avi file. Normally, my class take about three hours for each period. So, I should have a notebook that capable to records a lectures for 3 hours. (I can use power-plug in my class.)
So, the question is..
1. What's the minimum clock speed that I should aim for? (Thanks xAMDvsIntelx, 1.73 to 2.0)
2. How many RAM that I need to records and playback the video file? (Thanks xAMDvsIntelx, 1-2 GB)
3. What's the addtional hardware / software needed in this case ?
4. Last question, which one is more suite between amd turion64 and sonoma ? (I think yonah may not perform much difference because it's not multitasking process..)
Anybody have experience please help me.
Thanks in advance

Well, any decent modern CPU should get the work done (anywhere from 1.73 to 2.0 should work just fine). You don't really need anything special to record - its putting on the finishing touches like special effects, editing, and such that tax your computer most. If you don't really need to make your "films" a finished product, just about anything will do. I'd try to keep to a fast HD, either a 5400 RPM one or a 7200 RPM one if you're going to be intense about this. 1GB of RAM should work fine, but if you're going to be doing heavy editing, then I suggest going with 2GB RAM and looking for a decent GPU, probably somewhere in the ballpark of a X300 to an X700.

Recording lectures is not going to be taxing for your notebook.

Now, I'm weight myself about
1. Compaq Turion 64 1.8 Ghz, ATI on board graphic chipset.
2. HP DV4000 Sonoma 1.7 Ghz, X700.
I will upgrade RAM to 1 GB once I purchase and / or upgrade to 2 GB when it's cheaper.
The price different is around 300 bucks.. which one I should prefer please?

The v2000z is lighter and more mobile. If you are planning on any gamming, the x700 is a vastly superior card. A faster hard drive will help with video encoding.

Are you sure that your professors would allow it? Just a thought before spending the money

The Compaq V4000t is a lesser-priced version of the HP dv4000 (same notebook, different case). Also has the 128MB X700. Starts at $849 AR on www.HPShopping.com.
If you don't need a long battery life, then check out the MSI-1029 from RawPowerPC. Turion processor, better built than the HP/Compaq.
