Question:
Bad Battery Life with Core DUO? Toms investigation!
Tomshardware claims that Core Duo laptop is not energy efficient atleast with initial releases.

Check the battery life, much lesser than current Dothans, even with 71WHrs battery( where as dothan is using 50Whr battery).
May be it is good idea to hold back until they fix any bugs in the NAPA/Core DUO??
BTW, do not shoot me, I just read the article. You guys decide wheter it is good or bad.

i'm not sure, but in talking to most manufacturers they've made direct claims to us they're getting battery battery life. Lenovo even went so far to tell us that they're endorsing their upcoming X60 notebook as an all-day 8-hour battery life machine with the 8-cell battery. Also, a reviewer of the 8204WLMi (review to be posted tomorrow) claims 3 hours of life on a 15.4" screen notebook w/ 2.0GHz processor and ATI X1600 256MB card -- and 3 hours is pretty good in my book. We'll see though, the jury is still out.

What is sad to see is that Turion is not as good as a Dothan.... lets hope new Turion improve much more.

That Asus notebook with the Core Duo had a 512MB X1600 in it - could account for the low battery life.

@abaxter
Sorry for going offtopic here, but do you have any clue when will the Acer 8204wlmi be available in NY?
Thanx in advance for your reply.

Re: Bad Battery Life with Core DUO? Toms investigation!
TrustedReview's review of the TM8204 has much higher battery life numbers.
Mobilemark 2005 Battery Life of 221 minutes vs 136 minutes at Tom's.
Mobilemark 2005 DVD Playback of 177 minutes vs 125 minutes.
It's possible the Tom's Hardware machine is defective, or the battery savings technologies weren't set correctly.

Are you sure you read the whole review? It clearly states the following:
"We can't blame the CPU as we've already shown. Yonah by itself, perhaps better identified as the Core Duo processor, is definitely one of the most efficient and energy saving (mobile) processors we've ever seen. Whether battery power is disappearing into the ATI graphics chip or the chipset itself is something we can't say with certainty."
Perhaps it's the chipset and ATI chipset. I don't think you can assume all duo cores will perform the same way.

So far it seems like the consensus on the TM8204's battery life is somewhere around 3 hours. Since it has that huge ATI chipset, I would be willing to say that 3 hour battery life is really quite amazing. I only wish there was some way that we could scale down on the power being used by the GPU when it's not doing anything.
