Ive looked at the Acer TM4402, and Im leaning towards that right now, however the HP dv4000 (I think, the one with the x700) also looks good, however, Id like to have a laptop that x64 ready for Vista, so I guess Id prefer a Turion laptop.
Also, does anyone think the next line of ATI Radeon graphics, the x1_00 Series, will be available for 1200 or so by this summer? Any suggestions would be good, thanks.

Re: $1200 or less, light gaming?
You look like a good canidate for the Compaq V4000t - it's basically a lesser-priced version of the dv4000 (doesn't have all the multimedia stuff). I recommend customizing it on www.HPShopping.com. The 5400RPM hard drive will give you the best performance, and by upgrading the RAM yourself, you can save some money. Just get it from a place such as Newegg.com or ZipZoomFly.

Re: $1200 or less, light gaming?
anyone got a guess about those the new ATI video cards though? like the radeaon x1600, or whichever one is comparable to the x700 but with the newer technology support, such as pixel shader 3 or the new memory, and about how much you think theyll cost in the summer.

Re: $1200 or less, light gaming?
The new X1600 should be considerably faster (20%+) than the X700, and better for newer games such as FEAR.
However, at $1,200, you aren't going to get an X1600. The X700 is more than powerful enough for the latest games; for $1,200, that's the best you are going to get.

Re: $1200 or less, light gaming?
how does the x1400 match up to the x700? especially a x700 with 64 vram and a x1400 with 128 onboard + 128 hyper memory?
Im looking at a gateway I just saw with the intel duo processor, although the duo isnt really a deciding factor since I wont be multi tasking much, it would still be nice to have.

Re: $1200 or less, light gaming?
The X1400 should be a bit faster than an X600 - around 1700 or so in 3DMark05. It will not be as powerful as the X700, which manages about 2500 in 3DMark05.
That Gateway only has an integrated card I think. :(
This notebook goes over your price limit but is worth a look. Awesome specs. Not as nice of a video card as the HP dv4000, but still decent:
