I recommend the HP dv4000 - great notebook for the money, quality is above average. The display is very nice too, great for multimedia, etc. I'd check some local stores to see what kind of configurations they have. Futureshop should have them. ;)

You might want to consider an R51 Thinkpad. Finding a 120 GB hard drive may be difficult, though.
But I do suggest you re-evaluate looking for a notebook that will last 10 years. There really is just too much rapid improvement in the computer industry, and three years pretty much constitutes a "generation" in the computer world.
