Question:
Do P4s have CPU speed throttling?
Just wondering, does the mobile P4 (not to be confused with P4M) slow down it's speeds and/or voltages when disconnected from the AC source? any way to verify this on a laptop?
Answer:
All P4s utilize SpeedStep technology...even Pentium Ms use it. It is now built into Windows XP.
Answer:
It adjusts according to your processing needs. You can, of course, turn it off with Pentium 4s so that they are always running full tilt, but this will kill your battery in no time.
Answer:
Ok, I was just weondering because when I unhoked the laptop from AC and turn on max battery, the system info still showed it as being 3.00 ghz.
Answer:
ReverendDC I think you might be mistaken about all P4's use speed step. All "mobile" Pentiums use speed step but not all Pentiums do, the pentium 4 desktop CPU's do not use speed step and have no cpu throttling ability. I have a 3.0GHz desktop P4 in my computer and it will not slow down no matter what load it has on it. I think mabye spets has a desktop chip in his machine, just my opinion though.

Answer:
does intel make a mobile 3.0 w/ HT?
/probably not
Answer:
Actully I just looked and they do make them! here is the link

I geuss the main differneces are the mobiles have speed step and thus longer battery life, they also have a 533MHz frontside bus in stead of the 800MHz that the desktop version has, so you will lose a little speed.

Answer:
Heh, looks like I got the full desktop model.. 800 mhz FSB, northwood CPU.
no big deal, battery life is still pretty decent.. 1.5 hours doing heavy tasks, installing bunch of stuff.
Answer:
I have a 12 cell battery and get 3 hours with the screen at half brightness. Other wise I get 2.5 hours Its good though, just think of it as you have more power. I know people say the desktop CPU runs hot but my notebook is always cool! The cpu fan is always on though but its always on low unless I'm playing a game or something. The air coming out is usally barly warm too.

Answer:
If you notebook runs at differnet CPU speeds at different times, how do you know what CPU speed it is at? Not just the advertised CPU speed. Thanks in advance.
