Compaq V2570NR?

Question:
Compaq V2570NR?
I am looking for a laptop primarily for writing. (I write fiction and non-fiction)
Does anyone have experience with the Compaq I mentioned? I'm a newbie.

Looks like a nice notebook for you, I don't see any problems with it for your needs and its build quality is quite good for the price.

Hm, not sure, but I think the V2570NR is just for non-fiction. :)
OK, bad joke.
Anyway, the V2570NR has no obvious flaws, and is an exceptionally good deal. The ATI Radeon 200M video, 512 of RAM, and Turion-64 processor should allow you to easily switch to Windows Vista when it comes out, should you choose to do so.
Since you are a writer and will be typing a lot, I figure the keyboard quality is really the acid test for you. Before you actually buy, I suggest you go to Best Buy (or wherever) and do a little typing on one. If you are happy, that should seal the deal.
Just to mention an alternative, Thinkpads are renowned for the quality of their keyboards, and you might want to check out an R51 also.

I appreciate the quick replies--I'm probably going to buy one of these, and I will thank you in my future novel.

Yeah, if I were you, I'd definately go to a computer store and check out any V2000 and test out its keyboard. I personally found them a bit cheap and making too much noise, but I had tested older V2000s, maybe they've fixed it now or it might have just been crazy old me. But its good in anycase to test it out before you buy it.

I wouldn't say easily - those are the minimum requirements for Vista - 512MB won't be enough IMO (512MB is the minimum standard for XP) and the X200M isn't be best card for AeroGlass.
Bet getting back on topic - you might want to check out Compaq's glossy screens before buying one - they can get quite annoying if you're working in an area that has a lot of overhead lighting.

If you'd like another recomendation, let us know what your budget is, etc.
A ThinkPad will have a much better keyboard than the Compaq, but will be a bit more. I've seen the ThinkPad R50E on sale for around $600, very good deal.

I'd like to find something for under $800. I don't need it for games or anything else--just writing.
Thanks

I'd recommend the ThinkPad R50E. They have the best keyboards on the market, plus the screen will be very easy on the eyes - especially important if you are going to stare at it for a while.
Durable construction too. Here's a link:

EDIT: That notebook is a bit over $800 ($880), it's more of an example of what to look for - there are other models of the R50E for under $800 :)
Since you're just word processing, a Celeron processor would be fine.

Thank you everybody for your comments and suggestions. I looked through some of the other forums and have a few more ideas. At least now I won't feel so dumb at the computer store.
