Question:
Desktop's Obsolete by 2015?
This is really just out of curiosity. But with mobile processors being so hot and with HDs, processors, motherboards, etc. getting smaller and smaller and more efficient, do you think that eventually desktops will be completely replaced by notebooks for the general home user?
These are my thoughts, notebook sales have increased from 30 million units to 70 million units from 2001 to 2005. The notebook LCD which used to account for the bulk of the cost of the notebook has come down in price significantly. Considering that many premium-end DTR's can do almost everything that many of the desktops can do, in about 10 years, isn't it possible that the for the general public (excluding servers, programmers, etc.), won't everyone just have a laptop or other mobile device?

It's happening now. Mix in hybrid models like that concept from Dell and yes, I think it's a distinct possibility, except for a few niche uses like hard core gaming and home entertainment.

You forgot to mention it will have your DNA sample instead of a fingerprint reader, cardiovascular reading able too and that there will also be a diabetic compatible model which will take periodic readings on blood sugar levels. :)

Nope, all the same I believe that we will have both equally spread. We have reached a point where if we kept the computers we have now, we can achieve all the basic features and needs most people buy a computer for. Plus, desktops still offer more of a set feel to it, you do not see robbers stealing desktops very often because it is a large system which is pretty heavy. Laptops on the other hand can be swiped up by vicious felons (I know this is a bad view on the situation). Plus, motherboards can be bigger and more powerful in larger sizes, no matter how small technology gets, making desktops cheaper, easier, safer, and mroe powerful than laptops. These hybrid systems will not work too well, since most large programs will need a big screen. The small systems that people demand now have tiny thin screens which are breakable, and hard to read. Sure we can get fold out keyboards and such with laser keyboards and mice to come out of a palm pilot, but until people get world magnifying glasses no one wants to have to carry around a personal computing system for mainly phoning reasons, or a mini personal computing system for video watching. There is a limit to what we can and will do. By 2015 sure, the majority of people will own laptops and hybrid systems, but older desktops and such will retain a good value since the material costs itself will supply many more future tiny brands, and we have what we need already. I believe the desktop will last, it is more durable, big on purpose, and will remain a quality stationary system that will be used throughout the future.
This is just my opinion.

Good point. That's what made them last this long but the trend is changing which is the reason of this poll and Brian made a good comment on the coming hybrids. The only reason that desktops may make it into someone's home on 2015 is with those people that enjoy a more cinematic experience (movie viewing, full-blown gaming, etc). That's at least all I see, there may be more uses though.
Besides, portability is a great feature. I like to watch tv while fiddling around on my laptop. Can't say I would be able to do the same with a desktop. I gave up on them about 6 years ago.

It is funny to say (and I hope I am not jinxing the poll, vote if you have not already voted before reading on) that I have not seen any comments regarding the face that desktops will remain mainstream and the best option in the future. I believe that they offer so much not having to be required to move around like laptops. Research for desktops is compiled a heck of alot faster because of this, and instead of size and weight efficiency, desktop developers only have to rely on power and the ultimate system to worry about, none of the other requirements.
