It's difficult to find anything that inexpensive. Wal-Mart recently had one for $378.00 that would fit the bill but they are gone now. You might consider looking at Ebay and buying used. Also, if you can go a little higher the Compaq V2000 series can be had for $499.00 but you have to get the base system with no upgrades. Also, Dell has base systems for $499.00 as well at this time. Anyway, good luck with whatever you get.

Re: Budget notebook(FAQ filled out)
$450 is really tight...you're not going to have much of a selection.
I would take a look at the Dell Inspiron B120, might be able to get that for about your budget.
Also, OfficeDepot occasionally has nice prices for HP notebooks - look for the Compaq V2000Z. CompUSA is another place to check out.
Have you considered eBay? You can get a nice used notebook off of there, maybe a ThinkPad T21/22.
EDIT: Looks like lappyhappy already mentioned that ^

Is the Compaq Presario for $500 from compusa a good deal?
I would imagine I would have to buy a wireless card and maybe another stick of 256mb RAM, so it would probably be closer to $600 by the time I have all the bits I need and then plus tax which will add about another $50 on top. As I live in australia this would equal about $900 australian. So what do you think?

Re: Budget notebook(FAQ filled out)
Is it even possible to get that in Australia?
If so, then I like the configuration on that for the price. Sempron is a much better budget processor than the Celeron. Link is here:

Got the Compaq V2403NR for $450 from Best Buy sweet deal, fantastic budget unit for surfing, watching DVDs and basics. Deal might be coming back. Celerons are significantly better on battery life, Semprons with ATI offer better graphics for gaming. Good link on budget comparisons although I do not care for the Gateway.
