Digital audio output on HD Audio notebooks?

Question:
Digital audio output on HD Audio notebooks?
My laptop has Intel HD Audio with the Realtek ALC883 codec. The headphone jack also says "SPDIF" on it. However, I cannot get an SPDIF signal out of this jack; the reciever does nothing, and I still hear the analog signal.
I have SPDIF audio enabled in the Realtek control panel ("Output digital audio source" is selected, 48KHz.)
Any ideas? Has anyone else ever used HD Audio and SPDIF? (The notebook is an Acer Aspire 5672.)

I figured it out awhile ago.
SPDIF, at least on my Acer Aspire 5672, is optical. It uses a 3.5mm optical connection that's in the headphone output jack.
