Question:
5400 vs. 7200rpm laptop hard drives
Has anyone actually made the jump to 7200rpm from 5400rpm? I want to know if it's worth it.
It would be especially helpful if your upgrade was the same brand.

Re: 5400 vs. 7200rpm laptop hard drives
I have an Asus with the 7200 hdd and it is fast. But I have previously used only 4200 so don't know about the jump from 54k to 72k.
Its a worthwhile investment to have 72k hdd.

Re: 5400 vs. 7200rpm laptop hard drives
I moved up to 7200 from 5400 and can't say that I see much of a difference... granted, I don't do anything intensive on my notebook other than use it for office work.

Just get the one you want. Theres isnt much of a noticeable difference. Get the one your budget can handle, both are fast IMO. I have the 5400, and its extremely zippy.

Re: 5400 vs. 7200rpm laptop hard drives
I have been using an 80GB 5400RPM drive for over a year and a half now, I have no issues with it. Loading times are pretty fast [a little slower than my desktop's 120GB 7200RPM], boot-up is about 30-40 seconds.
What do you do with your notebook and what drive do you have in there now?

Re: 5400 vs. 7200rpm laptop hard drives
I've got a 40GB 4200rpm. I'm looking to get an faster 80GB to do some video editing. Would a 5400 handle that well? The price difference is about 30-40 bucks, but I'd be willing to dish it out for the performance gain, if it's reasonable.
I'm looking at Hitachi's, and I've heard their 5400s perform near 7200 levels, that's why I"m wondering.
Thanks!

Yes for video editing you don't want to go with anything lower then 5400. It is worth the 3040$. Good luck, and yes i think its ture that Hitachi's are very fast, and in some cases 5400's can outperform a 7200. Go with a Hitachi! :)

Is there a noticable drain on battery life with a 7200 RPM drive versus a 5400?

Re: 5400 vs. 7200rpm laptop hard drives
Theres not much difference.
I have a 4200rpm hard drive and that seems fast enough for my games.
Quake4 and CSS levels load exceptionally fast. In fact it is even close to my 200gb 7200 rpm hard drive!

Re: 5400 vs. 7200rpm laptop hard drives
I had 4200 rpm drives in both the Mac Mini and my Dell Inspiron 1100. I bought a Seagate 5400 and Hitachi 7200. I tried them it both but found no preformance difference for average use or OS start times. Both were faster than the 4200 rpm however (as expected) but if I were to do it again I would look more at warranty and price over 5400 vs 7200 rpm.
