Question:
Help Me Save Money
This thread won't be in the preferred format, mostly because I've allready tracked down the laptop I've wanted after two weeks of doing nothing but searching (It's been a long summer).
Since I'm in Europe, it's difficult for me to have a larger selection of laptops. The difference in price between an American one and a European one would probally be the shipping- so it's easier for me to buy one here. I've looked at the main models provided here, Acer, Asus, and Amilo, Sony, Dell, Toshiba- and most are still lagging behind in terms of technology or are overpriced.
The problem I have- is that as a student, this will most likely be the only chance I have to buy a laptop in the next three-four years. My parents are giving it to me as a gift, and it's hard to convince them to buy a top of the line laptop. These are the models I'm currently interested in: Is it worth it? Or is there really a diamond in the rough that I'm missing here:
Nexoc Osiris E703 (2159 euros)
17" WUXGA TFT (1920 x 1200)
Core Duo T2600 2.16 GHZ
2048 MB ram
120 GB
NVidia Geforce Go 7900GTX 256 MB
If you compare this to the Sager 5760, it looks identical. I haven't contacted this small company yet, but I'm sure if I asked they would tell me it's the Clevo. The problem of course is- that if I buy from this company, I would most likely get a German keyboard, a German XP, and German tech support. However, there is another company in the UK that also uses Clevo.
AJP 575U-H
17" WUXGA TFT (1920 x 1200)
Core Duo T2500 2.00 GHZ
2048 MB ram
80 GB
NVidia Geforce Go 7900GTX 512 MB (2,300 euros not including shipping)
So, this is my dilemna. Firstly, I don't know wether to buy from the UK (Im going to the UK for University next year and need XP in English). And secondly, I don't know which features to trim down in order to lower the price. I want a top of the line laptop which can run the best games for the next two to three years, but I can't afford to pay as much as I want.
Maybe it's just my obsession to get the best laptop possible which is preventing me from being pragmatic. Any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: I'm currently living in Vienna, Austria. Forgot to add that.

Re: Help Me Save Money
In the USA, the easiest way to trim/back and save money is to buy the minimum RAM from the supplier and add your own RAM later from a computer discount store (www.newegg.com).
Not sure how much this would apply to you though?

Re: Help Me Save Money
RockDirect sells Clevo notebooks - they are all the same as you supected:

If there is anything you can save money on, it is the RAM as Tiger said. You can also upgrade the hard drive easily aftermarket. However, make sure you can get the parts cheaper aftermarket.
What you should get when ordering the notebook:
-Processor
-Graphics card
-Screen
