Question:
Gaming Laptop for a reasonable price ?
Hi,
First of all, the questions:
1) Budget - £800 (GBP) maybe £900 if its really sweet
2) Screen size - 15" upwards for gaming I think
3) Use - General (Word, Inet etc) and Gaming (mostly WoW and sometimes try new demos - so it would be nice if it could still cope with games in a year or 2)
4) Mobility - Mostly on my desk but take it around a couple of times a week and use it on my knee, so I dont want burns on my knees
5) Games - WoW, maybe Sims 2, newer games/demos I try
6) Brands - To be honest, I dont know the differences between brands
7) Battery - Doesnt matter too much with gaming as most will die after an hour or so, but removable so I can use just the adapter and not have to worry about overcharging would be nice
8) Buying online - No problem - you guys seem to know what your talking about but I wouldnt mind somewhere big (PCWorld, Comet, etc) to be able to go back to if I have problems. I guess online is ok if they have good customer service though
9) Country - UK
10) Standard/Widescreen - doesnt bother me
11) Resolution - Im fine with 1024x768 but the larger (1400x1050+) does sound nice
12) Glossy/Matte - I have no idea of the difference
13) Looks - Dont care really
14) Lasting time - 18 month - 2 years maybe
15) HD - 80gb would be nice - 60gb min really
16) Drive - DVD-CD/RW min but preferably DVD-RW
Ok, now to general info ...
Ive been looking for the last couple of weeks for a reasonable gaming laptop for a good price. I was looking at the Sony FE21B but there seems to be quite a few posts on this forum against it so I wasnt too sure. I thought Id ask here as you all seem to know what you are talking about and I think that your help would be invaluable. The main problem I have is the decent spec for the price - the FE21B is 1gb RAM with the 128mb dedicated Go 7400 (which I havent heard great things about) and it has the extra 128mb from RAM with its TurboCache technology. I guess part of the question is will the 7400 be able to handle processing that many textures and is 256mb really needed for a laptop or not ?
If you need any more info, just ask :)
Thanks in advance,
Razor

Re: Gaming Laptop for a reasonable price ?
Funnily enough, I was gonna get the vaio on monday from the dixons group. But changed my mind coz something better came along, btw if you still want it, it's £810 from comet incase you didn't know.
I ordered this instead, and it's coming today! £693 is a bargain for the spec, and the video card is moreee then capable for your needs.

Thanks for that - looks quite nice
Im not really into the graphics cards - so I just look at the memory they have to be honest - but the FE21B has the dual core (which Im sure more games will start allowing for), more hard drive space and more texture memory. My main problem is that I cant see anything better for the price.
If I upgraded that Asus to 80gb drive, then it would be £50 cheaper than the Sony but have half the processing power (due to 1 less core) and less texture memory.
Another problem I have is telling the differences between the graphics cards in terms of what they can do. Laptop processors seem to be on the low side (1.5-2ghz) too, so I lean towards the dual core for a nice boost.
Edit: Just seen the "TOSHIBA SATELLITE A100-225" on PCWorlds website and I might consider pushing my budget that far - anyone know anything about it (or maybe somewhere to get it cheaper) ?

For that price the spec is awsome. The x1800 is one of THE best cards for laptop gaming.
