I'm looking for a laptop for college

Question:
I'm looking for a laptop for college
Um, I am new here as you can tell by my post count, if it shows that. I was just lurking around and it seems like you guys know a lot more about this kind of stuff than I do. So, any help is appreciated. Here is my premise:
I can't spend more than $1800. I like the screen size around 15.4", so I guess that fits into 15"-16". I don't want anything bigger or smaller. As far as tasks go, I don't think I'll be doing a whole lot of gaming, maybe a little, but nothing to intensive. Battery life isn't really important as long as it's more than 4 or 5 or so. I don't know what average is really. I don't mind buying it without seeing it in person. I'm in the US. California to be specific. I prefer standard XGA screens, but it's not a top priority. Glossy screens don't really bother me, so that doesn't matter either. I am willing to sacrifice hard drive space to get a higher RPM (7200 preferably).
Um, just to note, I can get a discount on Dell's from my college. I can get a E1505 with T2500, with 2 GB of ram, 60 GB 7200 RPM HD, 128 MB ATI X1400, for like $1750. I also saw a few Vaios and Acers that look good, and I was advised to look at Thinkpads. I am just not sure. Any help is appreciated. If I left something out that needs clarification, I apologize, just ask. Thank you.

i hope you realize that 2-3 is more in tune with average battery, usually 2 for anything with a good gpu. so if you were expecting 4, you will either be very disappointed or will have to get an extended/extra battery. for some good choices, check out the asus s96j, compal hel80, or hp nc8430. also, if you use the dell coupon codes, you will probably better price than with that discount.

Oh, like I said, I'm not too familiar with laptops. Battery life isn't a huge deal, I just wasn't sure what to expect. Thanks for the reply though.

I have one more question, how does a TV tuner work, and is it worth purchasing one?

Re: I'm looking for a laptop for college
It's only worth getting one if you want to watch TV on your laptop. If you have a TV Tuner, your laptop will function like a TV.
For $1,750, you can get a much better notebook than the Dell. That is a relatively high price to begin with for that configuration.
The Compal HEL80 from www.PowerNotebooks.com is a spectacular machine, and can have an internal TV tuner (with most laptops, the tuner is external). Build quality will also be much better than that of the Dell:

PowerNotebooks is one of the most reputable sites on the net, I ordered my notebook from them and the service was outstanding. See their rating on ResellerRatings here:
