3d workstation notebook
General Questions
1) What is your budget? $1300 MAX, I'd like to get it as close to $1000 as possible.
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
b. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
c. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
d. Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
3D work (Max, Viz, Revit, SketchUP), Rendering, 2D work (Adobe CS2, Revit, CAD, Gaming (I imagine a BF2 level of game would be the most demanding I'll use it for. Most likely Civ IV, Source games, etc.
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk? I'll be taking it to different places to use it on a desk at both places.
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games? Civ IV, Source Engine games, Far Cry, Etc.
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like? No Acer or Wal-mart Brands. I REALLY like the look of HP's. Dells are fugly, but doable.
7) How many hours of battery life do you need? 2-3, but more would be very welcome.
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person? Online is fine.
9) What country are you buying this in? Good ole USA
Screen Specifics
10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen? WS
11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
Let's put it this way, the higher the better. I won't be afraid of a WUXGA, but 1280 wide is acceptable.
12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen? Either is fine. Matte must be good quality and bright though.
Build Quality and Design
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you? It isn't the most important thing, but I do take it into consideration.
14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
September would be the absolute latest. I want one before Mid-August though.
Notebook Components
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB?60 or 80
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive? Of course I need an optical drive. At least a DVD/cdrw. DVD burner would be preferrable.

im getting a workstation for maya, and the cheapest i can configure is about 2100, and maya isnt all that much more demanding than 3Dmax. anyhting under about 200 is going to struggle to run 3dmax

Anything under 200 what? if you meant $2000, you are fairly wrong. You could get by on a 1.86 Duo and a 7600/1600 very easily. One example is the DV8000t that Chaz mentioned. You can get an E1705 for $1250 that will handle it as well. Not to mention the S96J and Compal's latest 14" and 15".
