Question:
4-year Gaming Notebook?
1. Budget = $2k.
2. 13-16" screen
3. I will be playing games, browsing the web, watching movies, and typing/doing work.
4. I will be taking my notebook outside and to class.
5. I want to play Oblivion.
6. No brand preference.
7. 2.5 hours of battery life.
8. I would not mind buying from a respectable online site.
9. Buying it for USA.
10. Standard, I'd probably run it on 1024x768.
12. Doesn't matter.
13. Looks are unimportant.
14. I want the laptop to last 4 years, and I would really like to play games made 3 years from now, on very low settings.
15. 60 GB of hard drive space.
16. DVD-RW drive.
This probably isn't doable, and I can wait for nice Core 2 Duo's, but any help is appreciated.

Check out this one: (9)Dell XPS 1210 $1850 + $59 at the link in my sig. ("Saved $1100...)
Do some research on the performance, and config it at Dell for a price comparison. Screen is smaller than you want but it's pretty powerful for its size and mobility. You might be able to get a 1505 or 1705 through the same seller.
Your item 14, "game in 3 years" is HIGHLY speculative. No one can predict but based on recent history it's very iffy. You're likely to find you want, and can afford, something else by that time anyway. Good luck on your quest!

How are we to know what will happen in 4 years? Most systems from 4 years ago can't play the games out now even halfway decent.

For a 15.4" notebook, the Compal HEL80 is a very well constructed machine, available at PowerNotebooks:

The Go7600 is a very powerful video card. You aren't going to get four years of gaming, so don't hope for that. Once DirectX 10 is released and there is hardware to support it, games will start supporting it; DirectX 9 will loose support well before four years is over.

Re: 4-year Gaming Notebook?
Well, the best thing for you to do right now, would be to get a notebook that is MXM enabled, and swap out the graphics card once the one on there is obsolete. Now that said, only the Toshiba P105-S921 is the only notebook that I know of that has the 7900GS in MXM. It fits your budget (it's exactly $2k, but slightly lower if buy it from Costco). On the downside, it's a 17", but you said you don't want a 17". But then again, we don't know if MXM is a technology that will be in use 2 or 3 years from now.

A 17" notebook is probably you're best shot at playing games four years from now as they offer the best cards.

Re: 4-year Gaming Notebook?
That may be true, but I don't really see him/her lugging a big 17" laptop to outside and to classes.
I would say go for a 15". It is really hard to find any laptop that will be gaming 4 years from now.

i think thats the best thing out there regardless
now if you wanna save about 200, then the s96j is of similar spec and larger. however Im not finding it in stock at the moment in most sites.
and, this leads me to believe that even the sites that show it available are actually full of it. So Id feel guilty recomending it. the next shipment is supposed to be 6-19 though.
