Question:
Help me oh mighty computer whizes =p
I'm needing to get a laptop for going into university next year. I've looked for SO LONG it's quite excruciating. I sort of have a few in mind that I'm looking to getting but please point out any other ones that maybe I haven't seen before. The big debate right now is between ThinkPad t43 (specs: 60GB HD, 512 RAM, P M 2GHz, fingerprint detector, bluetooth, 3 yr warranty), the HP dv2000 and the LG T1 Express. I can get discount with IBM and get the ThinkPad for only $1150 but the LG is so gorgeous but it's $1800, the HP is almost outta the picture since i can't get it in Canada yet.
1) What is your budget?
more around $1000-$1500, but as u can see i'm already drawn to the LG and it's way over budget.
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
14" widescreen (i really want widescreen, the MAJOR drawback of the ThinkPad)
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
no gaming, just internet, MS office, music, MSN, playing movies, occasional photoshop
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
I'm going away for university so i would take it with me quite a bit
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
nope..but games..it'd be like..the online ones?
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
i'm not too big on Toshiba and Sony, it's really nice but it seems like half the cost is the brand
7) How many hours of battery life do you need?
No idea..def more than 3? If all the other specs are good i'd go for just 3 hrs
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
Mmmm ya..i don't know about that..it'd hav to be a reliable brand
9) What country are you buying this in?
Canada
Screen Specifics
10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen?
widescreen!! standard just seems so odd now..
11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
e. WSXGA+ - 1680x1050; Wider viewing version of SXGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.
(*psss* i actually hav no idea what those mean..)
12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
glossy LOOKS nice from afar..but actually USING it..either's fine though
Build Quality and Design
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
mm..i think so..i'm trying not to make it important..but ya it is but again..if the specs are perfect..
14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
before the end of this summer and i want it to last at least 4 yrs (i've had my desktop for 7 so ya...i'm a really tolerant patient person)
Notebook Components
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB?
i think 60GB is fine (my computer is so old...it's a 18GB HD)
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive?
i want a DVD and CD-RW
Thanks for listening to my long-winded concerns =)

Check the HP DV2000. I like the finish and the compact appearance, even though it weighs the same as the DV1000t.
Also look at the Dell e1405 and Compaq V3000. The Toshiba 14.1" aren't expensive but they are thicker and heavier than other 14.1" notebooks.
If you can tolerate 12.1", look at the XPS 1210 and get a monitor for your Residence Hall room.

They do make a widescreen ThinkPad.
Yes..they do..but the one i'm talking about is a special deal and if i blow $2000 for the widescreen thinkpad, why not get one that's nicer?
