Help me help someone else...

Question:
Help me help someone else...
I'm trying to help my brother to replace his stolen laptop. It was old anyway so it's not too much of a loss, but it's becoming difficult for me to help him so I'm seeking advice of the knowledgeable on this board. :o
Here's the FAQ filled out, based on what he's told me:
1) Budget: Less than $1300; the lower, the better
2) Size: Either ultraportable or thin/light ranging from 12"-14"
3) Tasks: Internet, music, moviemaking*
4) Taking it places, often
5) Very little gaming, if at all
6) No brand preferred nor avoided
7) 3+ hours
8) No preference to buying in store or online
9) Purchasing in USA
10) widescreen
11) WXGA, WXGA+
12) glossy
13) Yes; looking for the best build and materials fitting budget
14) ASAP and looking to last a good 3 years or more
15) I'd say 60+ GB
16) DVD+/-RW preferred
Extras: A media card reader is preferred, but not necessary. Same applies to Bluetooth.
He essentially wants something portable and light with a DVD burner. He's considered the Macbook, HP DV2000/Compaq V3000, Dell XPS M1210. I've suggested the Sony VAIO SZ series, but it's a bit steep in price. The only reason we've considered the Macbook is due to its simpler user interface for making movies.
*His definition of movie-making is apparently making a slideshow of photographs put to music. Unfortunately I can't think of a simple program for my brother to use that runs in Windows.
I'm not to keen on the Macbook personally, but he also thinks that the M1210 is a bit thick. He also prefers less plastic for the chassis. It seems that parts of his wants don't fit his budget, but I'm trying to fit his "needs."
Thanks for anyone who helpfully responds and especially those who bothered to read this entire post. Note: I'm still learning to get to the point a lot quicker :p

Re: Help me help someone else...
I think the MacBook is probably an excellent choice, especially if he's not a hardcore computer user or needs specific windows programs (or even if he does - it's XP capable). I don't know about DVD burners.
There are a few ASUS models that might be good for you, but I don't know their model numbers.
Also, the Compal HGL30 is taking preorders - it's a very powerful 14" (which might be just under your budget) that is quite wellbuilt and can be equipped with a DVD burner. (https://powernotebooks.com/configure.php?special=374)
