Re: Gaming Lappy Suggestions?
The Clevo M570U might work for you. Not sure if you can fully deck it out for under $1700 though. Check the Sager Forum for a post by Gophn. He put a Clevo together for close to your budget (I think he went with a different model though).

Re: Gaming Lappy Suggestions?
A 17" gaming notebook is probably out of your price range . . . there is the Dell E1705, but it has rather average build quality and is 'ugly'. Powerful though.
The HP dv9000z (when it comes out) may be more to your liking - Turion X2, but a Go7600. Still fast, but not as fast as you can get.
The Clevo M570U mentioned will offer great quality, but you'll end up paying around $1,569 for the barebone alone:

Re: Gaming Lappy Suggestions?
Here's the Gophn's post about building his own Sager (D900K, though).
I think Chaz may be right though, it is most likely going to end up being more expensive than your budget allows. A very nicely configured NP5760 goes for about $2500, so if you save 300-400 (just a guestimate) by building yourself, it will probably still be $2200 or so. I'm sorry, I thought it would be closer than that to $1700.

Intel's Core Duo is faster than the Turion X2. . . I'd get one of those instead. Or, you can wait a month for the 64-bit Core 2 Duo.
HP dv8000t is another option.
