Question:
Ex DellHell Victims--What did you replace yours with that made you happy?
Hi all. Like many others, I have decided to escape my DellHell after many computers and a long relationship with them.
Rather than replacing the failed motherboard on my 24 month old Dell 600m [now a] brick-top, I am looking to use the money needed to fix it to instead purchase a new cheap (under $800), but decent laptop. Nothing too fancy, just reliable, since I use it for school.
Dell has absolutely wrecked its company with wretched technical support and cheapened their models down to where they are no longer reliable, and I say that as a long-time supporter of theirs.
Can anyone help me by sharing with me any inexpensive laptops they have purchased that have been rock solid, sturdy performers which they have been extremely happy with? Toshiba's, maybe? I'd be forever grateful! Thanks.

Under $800 and reliable is going to be tough to come by.
You might post a FAQ, which would help us narrow it down some.
Toshiba might be a good choice. Read . They have had overheating and lockup problems in the past, but many people seem to be happy with them.
Lenovo/IBM is probably the best built in that price range, but you will need a good sale and a minimal configuration.
I think Sony has a Pentium M based system for slightly more than that which would probably be pretty good.
HP and Compaq are pretty good and have some models in that price range.
Gateway has some nice units in that price range, but I don't know about their reliability (not great, from the reports).

I replaced my Dell Inspiron 8100 and E1705 pieces of crap with a lovely Asus W3J! Its an excellent machine.

You can get a good HP dv5000t to fit your budget. Won't be too lightweight, but good build quality + tech support.
