I'd like more of a 'namebrand' one such as Dell, HP, Toshiba etc.

Buying online works well for me as I usually buy stuff much cheaper here.

The Dell Inspiron e1705 (with discount coupons) is a relatively safe choice. Also an HP dv8000z would suit your needs. Both are 17", not quite portable, and with good screens.
With the HP you get better build quality and better customer service. The Dell looks better. Either way, you can buy/make notebook skins for customization.

It is a good multimedia notebook and has good build quality; better than Dell as C. said.

or the hp dv5000t. the dell e1505 is another choice, especially considering the price with dell coupons. the toshiba a100 is a decent notebook as well.
