Changing from ultraportable to thin and light

Question:
Changing from ultraportable to thin and light
I hope i'm not posting something that is already answered, but I couldn't find anyone else that was in this situation. Hope this post isn't too long....
I have been looking into getting a new notebook and i'm fairly certain that the D620 has all the features (speed, good resolution, fast hard drive) I would need for the next few years. I will be using this for business (web development, network administration, system administration) and the remainder of my graduate classes (computer engineering). This means I pretty much have the notebook with me everytime I go to campus and everytime I need to go to the office or the server rooms.
I currently have a D400 and it probably weighs about 4lbs or so and I know the D620 is suppose to weigh about 5-5.5 lbs or so. I would definately buy the travel module because i rarely use a burner on-the-go so maybe that will shave a half pound off the notebook? I guess the D620 width is about 2 inches more then the D400 also (the rest of the dimensions are about the same). Will this change in weight and size be very noticable in my backpack while carrying? Has anyone else done this and not had a problem with the increase? I have a D800 and it is a brick, so thats why I bought the D400. I was looking forward to the D420, but the D420 downgraded to the ULV instead of normal processors. I am looking for a processing performance boost from my D400, so this is not an option. I really wish they maintained the D4XX series performance, even though they are slightly thicker and heavier. I just don't want to order this notebook and then decide its too heavy, as i did with my D800.

I have gotten advice from this board already about what would be a good notebook to get. Everyone was a lot of help. I guess my other choices would be the Z61t or the X60, but that means i have to get a new docking solution and throw out my D/Dock. X60 looks great for speed and performance but it doesn't offer Cingular's WWAN, only uses a trackpoint (very use to the trackpad and i'm great at it), and i don't think it has a DVD+RW DL burner. Not sure on all that, but maybe someone can confirm?? I think i could get use to the trackpoint, but i'd rather get Cingular since I have their plan already and I need the dual-layer burner...
Thanks for any assistance and sorry for the long post!

if i were you, i would consider finding something of similar weight, e.g. a textbook, a bottle filled with water to weigh as much, and just walk around with the extra weight and see how it feels.

I think you will be happy with either the D420 and the X60, as both are ultra-light at around 3lbs and both are well suited for light usages, such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. The X60 of course would be more suitable for other heavy duty tasks as well because it comes with a 1.66 GHz Duo Core processor whereas the D420 has a wimpy 1.06 GHz Core Solo (I think it's a lot slower than my current 1.73 GHz Sonoma D410).
The thing I am quite skeptical about is the D420 processor speed, that Dell's website claim it is Vista capable. Well, yes, sure it is Vista Capable but if it takes 5 minutes just to boot up, then no way am I going to use it, I don't care even if it's Longhorn Server capable!
Anyways, I too am deciding whether to go D420 or X60. I will probably come to a conclusion in the next week or so once I do some seriously testing on them (both the D420 and X60 arrived today). But as of this moment, the X60 has the upperhand...

PS. The 4:3 12" LCD on the D410 is easier on the eyes than the D420's 16:9 12" LCD because the fonts are bigger on the 4:3 than on the 16:9. The D420 is not very good for 40+ year-old users....
