Compaq/HP vs Dell vs Toshiba
Hi there
Im considering to buy a low end notebook.
The three main notebooks which I am considering is the
Compaq

Toshiba

Comparing these two, price is not a major issue. In terms of performance and reliability, which one can you recommend?

In terms of performance, I believe it'd be Toshiba > Compaq > Dell. the x200m graphics chip in the Compaq and Toshiba beat the Dell's by a long shot, and the Celeron in the Toshiba is based off the Yonah architecture, so should be a bit ahead of the older Celeron and the Sempron. I'm not positive on where the Sempron sits though, as I couldn't really find good benchmarks to compare with.

I think you can get a better deal on the compaq!!. In terms of performance I would always choose the Sempron over Celeron but the Dell has a better HDD (5400 rpm). I have L2000, which is the same as the compaq you selected and can tell you that the build quality will be probably above that of the Dell /don't know for Toshiba/.
x200 is way better.
Oh, the Compaq is 14 inch, more portable about 2.5h battery time with 6 cell battery. Unfortunately I see this Compaq does not have the productivity ports - additional usb, firewire, card reader.

I got the same exact toshiba with a core solo instead of celeron for only $649 plus a free printer.

Im gonna be using this notebook for basic use. Word process, internet, email, music, some movie watching. No gaming.
Im gonna be getting it near the middle-end of August when there is usually back to school sales. Is it worth spending the extra money to upgrade to a Centrino or a Duo Core processor for my uses?
