High Quality Notebook for College

Question:
High Quality Notebook for College
General Questions
1) What is your budget?
About $1200.
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
Anywhere from 12-16".
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
College classwork, writing papers, etc. Also I multitask like crazy with Firefox and other programs, and I'd like to be able to play some high quality games as well.
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk? Might take it to the library on occasion, but for the most part it would remain in my room.
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games? COD, COD2, HL, CS, maybe UT2004 and HL2... mostly FPS's, anyway, if that makes a difference. Not a fan of adventure games like Oblivion or WoW.
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like? I hate Macs.
7) How many hours of battery life do you need? 2 hours or so at minimum.
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person? Not from a well-known dealer.
9) Please select your country's flag as a post icon and tell us what country are you buying this in? USA
Screen Specifics
10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen? Don't care.
11) What screen resolutions would you prefer? Basically anything that would go over 1040x768.
12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen? Doesn't matter as long as the screen is functional for both gaming, internet and general text editing and junk.
Build Quality and Design
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you? Not really, but it couldn't hurt.
14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last? Fairly soon. Sometime within the next month for sure. I want it to last for the two years I'll be getting my Computer Networking Associates Degree. Anything beyond that is a plus because I'll probably be buying a higher-class notebook after college anyway.
Notebook Components
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB?
Highest possible.
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive? A DVDRW would be awesome, but I don't need it. Don't really need anything RW either so a DVD-ROM would probably take care of everything.

I've been looking heavily at the that's being offered at Newegg.com. Has the best stuff in it that I've been able to find for the price. Anyone able to top it?

The Compal HEL80 and Asus S96J are both good - the Asus will have better 3D performance, but the Compal has a few more features.
