i'm lost but need a laptop badly
I probably sound stupid but i apologize, I've never had a laptop before, only desktop computers. But for college i need one. :confused: Please help. Thanks everyone.

1) What is your budget? around 600-800
2) What size notebook would you prefer? thin and light or mainstream
a. Ultraportable; 12" screen or less
b. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
c. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
d. Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen
3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook? schoolwork, lots of writing (english major), holding music, holding pictures.
4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk? taking it with me
5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games? no.
6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like? i've heard apples are bad? i dont know if thats true but i will need windows.
7) How many hours of battery life do you need? i need it to last at least 3-5 hours? [how long does it take to charge?]
8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person? I'd like to at least see a picture/detailed description.

c. UXGA - 1600x1200 - Very small text and graphics icons, you can fit lots of stuff on the screen.
Widescreen
d. WXGA or WXGA+ - 1280x768/800 or 1440x900; Wider viewing version of XGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.
e. WSXGA+ - 1680x1050; Wider viewing version of SXGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.
f. WUXGA - 1920x1200; Wider viewing version of UXGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.
12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen? Matte, I would think glare is bad if you're constantly writing..
Build Quality and Design
13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you? Not so much, but I will have to carry it around a lot.
14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last? I need this laptop to last as long as possible, there will be no way for me to replace it for a good 4 years... I intend on buying it in about a month.
Notebook Components
15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB? My current computer holds 80 GB.. i'd like to stick to something around there.
16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive? dvd-rom

First of all, there is no laptop that has a battery that will last 24 hours. About the most I have seen is about 8 hours. Typically a laptop is doing good if it last 3-5 hours. For college you can typically last for a couple of classes and hopefully you can charge it in between. Also, you can easily charge overnight. Also, you can buy spare batteries to extend the life of your laptop. Anyway, here is what I recommend, the Compaq V3000z. Find it here:

if you want it to last 4 years, i would suggest trying to up your budget a bit and getting a business line notebook...like the dell d620. if that isn't possible, you could also consider the dell e1405 with the dell coupons
