Question:
Final Decision - IBM vs. HP (help needed)
Imagine these 2 were really close in price, which one would you recommend:

• Graphics: ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 256MB
• Memory: 1GB DDR2
• HDD: 80GB SATA
• Optical drive: DVD RW DL
• Dimensions: 358 x 259 x 28 mm
• Weight: 2.7 kg
• Warranty: 36 months
• Battery: 4 h

VS.
IBM t60 (UT0F4CD)
• Processor:
Intel® Core™ Duo T2400 CPU 1.83 GHz L2 Cache: 2048K
• Screen: 15.0" SXGA+ TFT 1400x1050
FlexView display with wide viewing angle and high density
• 512MB 667MHz PC2-5300 DDR2 max 2 GB DDR2 (would upgrade to 1G)
• Hard disk: 80 GB, S-ATA 5400 rpm
• DVD Multiburner
• ATi Mobility Radeon x1300 64MB
• 2 x stereo speakers
• 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet card (LAN)
• 56k v.90
• 802.11a/a/b/g wireless
Bluetooth
Do all TP's come without S-video?
Now, obviously - HP outperforms TP in many areas (cpu, ram, vga), TP gets credit for FlexView screen and (I guess better build quality).
This would be the laptop I would keep for min 3-4 years.
Tasks: photoshop, webdesign, programming in c++/visual, mysql (college style :)), here and there strategy game or two.
Is it true that t60's are no longer built as good as older t4* series?
If that's the case, wouldn't HP be the better choice?
Thanks.

The IBM T60 you config. is crap. If you want real IBM workstation power, get the T60p. That will kick the HP's as.

Re: Final Decision - IBM vs. HP (help needed)
well, if they are "close" in price... then i might just have to laugh at the build config of the ibm...
go with the hp i know of a couple of people that got their MBA's in business and all use HP they are very reliable computers and are VERY QUIET... i have used an ibm think pad and lets just say its quite a bad piece of s**t...
what the heck is firegl 256mb graphics card?? firegl?! but even if it is a really low 256.. its still better than a 64...
dude i would strongly consider looking at powernotebooks.com or discountnotebooks.com since u didnt state your whereabouts discountnotebooks.com is good for canada and eurp. power is good for USA residents since they dont ship overseas.. or to canada... only to puerto rico and hawaii. and USA territories.
good luck

The FireGL is a workstation card used for 3d modelling, not gaming. The card is optimized for use with things like Maya 3d studio max, etc. I have used my uncles's T60 and it is amazingly built, the hp business class machines are built really well too so don't worry about that. Personally I would go with the Hp just because of teh better specs, if they are similarly priced, tho i admit that Flexview screen would be really nice.

Can't really go wrong with either, but if I were you I would at least compare similar resolutions, CPU, memory, graphics card and hard drive.
What you have done there is compare a very good HP and an average T60 in terms of specs.
If the choice is only between these two configurations (for whatever reason) then go for the HP, hands down.

Well of these two obviously the HP is the better choice. HP business class notebooks have very good build quality (though maybe not quite as good as IBM).

I would gladly buy from online stores, however I live in Croatia, and we aren't in EU (yet) ;).
So ordering from online dealer (e.g. German) would prove more expensive and tax would make a final blow (22%) :(
I have the opportunity to get those without tax, and they would cost around 1400-1500€ (1700-1800 US $).
I imagine that's very good price for HP.
IBM's are poorly represented in the few shops here - they offer mostly R and Z models, and only few T models.
And the T60p costs almost 3000€ (with tax).
So there's a consensus on HP :) ?
