Question:
Apple Macbook vs Lenovo ThinPad z61t vs Macbook Pro
I'm faced with a dilemma , and I was hoping for some input. My current laptop was purchased two years ago, for school. It is an HP Pavilion with a AMD 64 3400+, 15.4" widescreen, 512 RAM etc etc. It was plenty powerful, but I soon learned that it was too large to be useful anywhere other than a computer desk. Size and portability are VERY important to me.
As such, I plan to buy a Lenovo Thinkpad z61t, Macbook or Macbook Pro within the next 10 days or so.
I really wanted a z-series, and waited for the Core Duos to come out in June. When they came out, they were advertised for $1900 on the Lenovo website. The cost was a bit prohibitive, soI decided to look for alternatives, and found one in the Macbook.
Now, the Thinkpads have dropped in price (same range as the MB), so I am faced with a dilemma .I've been really excited about playing with OS-X, but I at the same time, I like the durability o the Lenovo. Even worse, by University bookstore is offering new Macbook Pros (the 2.0 ghz version) for $1699.
So it is going to boil down to macbook v Macbook Pro
and macbook v Thinkpad.
What do you guys think? The Macbook is obviosuly the most portable...the Thinkpad has the best/most features, and the macbook Pro...the largest of the three, can be had at an attractive price.
Any input?

Also, how much of a difference is there between the 1.86 ghz Macbooks, and the 2.0 ghz macbooks? Other than the former's lack of a superdrive? What kind of performance gains/losses can I expect with the extra .14 ghz?

If you fill out the FAQ we will be able to help you better. I do not how heavy or big you HP is but if you found the 15.4" screen to be too big the MacBookPro probably is not right for you unless it was just a weight issue you had with your HP. If you know the MacBookPro's size and weight are good for you (it really sucks to buy a laptop and find out its not portable enough for you to use everywhere you would like to) and OSX suits your needs thats what I would buy. OSX is awesome. I would not buy a MacBook because it has integrated graphics, a terrible keyboard in my opinon and so so build quality. As far as the difference between 1.8ghz and 2.0ghz I do not think you will notice the difference. The reason to buy the 2.0ghz model is for the superdrive. IBM Thinkpads are probably the best quality laptops out there so I would not hesitate to buy one assuming it fits your needs. I would also look at the IBM T60 over the z61t unless you really want a wide screen.

I was/am in your same situation. My Pavilion is way too heavy to carry around every day.
A Macbook is best for that purpose. The 15.4" Macbook Pro, however, isn't too heavy at 5.5 lbs (if I remember correctly). The performance difference is minimum. What really differs is the gaming performance, as the Pro has a dedicated GPU whereas the "base" Macbook doesn't. If gaming is not your thing, then definitely do go for the Macbook, IMHO. Just be wary, cuz it gets hot.
